TURKISH combat planes and ground troops have crossed into northern Iraq to hunt down Kurdish guerrillas who have killed 29 members of Turkey's security forces and five civilians in a series of raids over the past two days.
The incursion, which Turkish news accounts said killed 21 members of the Kurdish Workers' Party, or PKK, underscored the fragile state of Iraq's security 11 weeks before all US troops are to be withdrawn from the country.
The violence between the Kurdish PKK and Turkish security forces continues to escalate. Each day there are new victims and the risk of a civil war is rising. The future hinges on Prime Minister Erdogan -- and whether he chooses diplomacy over military confrontation.
