John Lewis, Civil Rights hero, goes to support OWS in Atlanta...and this new "democracy" silences him.

I'm just not sure what to say. I ask you to watch the video...it is hard to watch with the repeating thing that they do...but stick through it.

What gets me is that at least half or more of the crowd seems to want John Lewis to speak. But the "leader" here is able to convince them to push it back until after they are done with their "agenda". John Lewis had to leave soon, just stopped by to give support...and they send him away. They have a "vote" to see if they want to let John Lewis speak "right now"...most people raise their hands with their wiggle fingers hand signal (if you don't know about the hand signals...look them up...it's a bit comical). Then they ask if they should make him wait to talk after the agenda "because he isn't more important than any other human"...and again...most people raise their hands.

And you have to watch the end of the video as John Lewis is leaving and someone is trying to say something...apparently when someone is saying something they don't want to hear...the "leader" yells "mic check"...and the whole crowd yells "mic check" to drown out any dissenting voices.

To John Lewis's credit...he was interviewed later and was very understanding about it all.

I really don't know what to think though...it's mind boggling that you wouldn't want help or support from someone who has gone through what you are trying to do.

If you want to see what was so important on their "agenda" that they turned John Lewis away for...here is that video.

That seems like the right thing to do in my opinion.

Really?

Telling people where the bathroom are and clarifying what the difference between an "announcement" and a "proposal" is more important than having someone who led a similar movement speak and give his support???

This is why I see this movement failing.

I was thinking the same thing.

Why does this guy have the power to silence others with his "mic check" and his twisting of "proposals" to clearly steer the opinion of the crowd.

The crowd overwhelmingly voted for John Lewis to speak...then after he re-phrased it slightly to make it seem like they would be bowing down to John Lewis...the crowd overwhelmingly votes for him to not speak at that time.

And since they don't have a "consensus" (because the same people voted for and against it)...they deny him and send him off.

I just don't get it.

I guess by their logic, yes they would.

Because he isn't/wasn't more important than any other human....and yet he kind of was.

This "leaderless" movement seems to have leaders...and they are doing their best to keep other well respected people away so they can play pretend government in parks.

people keep sharing this video and getting the wrong idea. even John Lewis didn't get upset. some of us actually spoke to him after the event, and he said he understood completely.

john lewis was there and we had an agenda, we decided to stick to our agenda. there is nothing marxist, about it. why should we let one person, regardless of who he is, get the right to completely overturn and throw off our agenda? it was decided that he was welcome to speak after we finished our agenda, but he HAD TO LEAVE.

the only reason it was proposed was because he was SCHEDULED TO SPEAK at a different GA but showed up to this one unannounced. daaamn

Oh please, are you people serious? Lewis is NOT ENTITLED to speak there. The few people that took up the megaphone complimented his achievements and showed a lot of respect for the work that hes done. Maybe I missed something in the video but it seemed to me that Lewis walked off before they made a finite decision.

Of course he understood...because he is a class act and that speaks to HIS character...it doesn't justify or excuse that these people silenced him.

If you were there...could you please share with us what was so important on this "agenda" that couldn't wait? Actually...share with us ANYTHING important that has come out of these "general assemblies".

And, since you seem to be involved...who gave the guy with the megaphone the right to run these? ho gave him the right to use his "mic check" to drown out any dissention???

No, he is not enttled to speak...but as a movement that has similarities to the one he led..you would think people would WANT him to speak.

But clearly these people have it under control...they didn't need support from John Lewis...they got the directions to the bathrooms and cleared up the difference between an "announcement" and a "proposal"....good job guys.

John Lewis came down to offer support...he was denied...if I was him..I would never go back. OWS potentially just lost a strong ally....but I'm sure the guy with the megaphone has just as much experience in a civil protest as John Lewis does

have you been involved? nope, don't think so. yet after your hours of experience on youtube and live streams, you, from the outside, think you have to right to label the movement. do you see a problem with that?

when did humans, looking out for humans, equate to socialism?

believe it or not, we were tryna figure when, and where to occupy. and we were also discussing how we would deal with people such as the mayor, city councilmen, police, and those who would try to shut us up. and THEN we were to discuss (wait for it.... wait for it) how to give maximum exposure to our supporters such as John Lewis, who happened to show up because we were a couple of blocks from his office!!!

ETA: dude doesn't "run these" at all. General assemblies are moderated by different poodle every time. if you call a town hall meeting, I would hope that you moderate your town hall meeting.
