The discovery was made at Blombos Cave, 200 miles east of Cape Town, on a high cliff facing the Indian Ocean at the tip of South Africa. Christopher S. Henshilwood, of the University of Bergen in Norway and the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, led the team of researchers from Australia, France, Norway and South Africa.

Archaeologists have discovered a 100 000 year old workshop holding tools and ingridients, in a cave in South Africa, that were used in manufacturing of some of the earliest paint known to man.

It is believed these guys had stones and tools wich they used to grind a colourful dirt, enriched with iron oxide, into a powder called ocher. This ocher was then mixed with animal fat from bone marrow, and some charcoal. Samples of this reddish ocher was found on some of the tools, and in large abalone shells, where this paint was liquefied, and mixed into a usable paste.

Abalone shells used to mix the ocher in.

Archaelogosits said that this reddish ocher is the earliest example of how Homo Sapiens, processed this paint. It is believed that it was used either for decoration, on artifacts or indeed to paint their own bodies for spiritual reasons or just mere decoration, much like tatoos today.

What is rather important to these Scientist is that this shows that these early humans, thought very much like us.

In a report published online on Thursday in the journal Science, the researchers called this evidence of early conceptual abilities “a benchmark in the evolution of complex human cognition.”

Before this discovery no workshop older than 60 000 years have been heard about, and the earliest cave painting date from about 40 000 years ago. This shows that the cave people of Southern Africa even this early on, was allready discovering, collecting and combining substances, skills that reflected advanced technology, and social practises, as well as the mind of the self aware! It appears that these early humans, had developed a very basic idea of chemistry much earlier than expected.

This is very interesting. Thanks for the post. I love how little bits of 'truth' seem to be slowly popping up here and there with actual dates ranging back older then the Pyramids - which mainstream has been labeling 'the oldest structures known to man' for the last 100 years.

Now the next step is for scientists to stop thinking our ancient ancestors, the 'homo sapiens'(why don't they just say humans? modern day humans are still categorized as being 'homo sapiens'), were dumb as a post; or from these archaeologist/scientists point of view: smart as a post! lol.

If humans knew how to make paint 100, 000 year ago then for all we know they were survivors from a previous advanced civilization that knew how to 'things' they wanted to paint like houses, or art, their toe nails. (I only say survivors because apparently these findings were in a cave. Maybe their houses got CME Solar Flared to pieces? Poor things.)

Nice find!

I love finding new proof of how advanced people "have been" for such a long time.

Great find. There is always something to learn about Africa, its civilizations are far older than people can imagine.

Your are on to something, but shhhhh, you will discredited, and regarded as a lunatic for seeing things how they may have been. The real history. We are just playing catch up at the moment.
Excellent post.
The genetic markers are there if we look, we survived quite a few catastrophes. In order to survive something so grand, one must have some sort of knowledge of the event.......

Well, if you consider that scientists basically see these early humans as nothing more than "ape men" really, then yeah sure, it is rather advanced.

Mixing the paint and creating is but a part of it. It goes further though, because it means these early humans wanted to record pictures, wanted to create, wanted to decorate. They were self aware.

Hardly the stupid "ape men" we are so often led to be believed are our forefathers. Remember this is 100 000 years ago...

Mainstream WHO? Scientists? More like the "church" teaching that man first popped up approximately 5,000 years ago. If it weren't for religion and their stifling scientific thought throughout history we would already be traveling around the universe at or beyond the speed of light.

Religion = root of all things evil !

Painting is so awesome. It's great to see that even people 160k + years ago also enjoyed paint!
Also, from the article linked on post 1 of this thread, "At the time of the first Blombos discovery, Dr. Henshilwood said, “We’re pushing back the date of symbolic thinking in modern humans — far, far back.”
It's fun to imagine what humans so long ago may have speculated about the significance of the color red.

Thank you, I have saved the page to show others as they never believe me unless there are pictures and writing to go along or unless they see it on that moving picture contraption in their front rooms lol.

I don't wish to go into this thread too deep as it is 1:50 am in the UK where I am & I must go to bed to be able to function semi normally in the morning. I am amazed at the little trickles of truth that are seeping through the cracks in the dam that obscures 95% of peoples views, they are so tiny but at least now they are there. I can't wait for that dam to burst and for us all to be able to see the truth plain as the sun on a cloudless day.

I will check into this thread again when all is dealt with tomorrow as this interests me and I enjoy seeing others opinions and perspectives on matters such as this.

Did the bible teach you to call your fellow man toothless and uneducated ? That's what's so great about fanatics, if they have nothing worthwhile to say they resort to name calling.... btw, God will punish you for that !

Oh and yes I have read the bible. You should read the Pagan Christ by Tom Harpur, it'll learn ya a thing or two !
