The Worst Mississippi River Flood Ever?

This is getting really scary folks.

We've all heard/read about the levees being blown, as well as possible after-effects to the New Madrid Fault Line.

What seems to be getting missed is that this is quite simply an unprecedented flood in our country's history. The effects of this are going to be felt for quite a long time I'm afraid.

Here are some highlights from the above article:

In fact, some are now projecting that this will be the worst Mississippi River flood ever recorded since the United States became a nation. You don't believe that? Well, Bob Anderson, an Army Corps of Engineers spokesman based in Vicksburg, Mississippi says that there has "never been a flood of this magnitude on the upper Mississippi". And you know what they say - "never" is a really, really long time.

So how long is this flooding going to last?

At this point, the Mississippi River is expected to crest at 48 feet around May 11th.

But this disaster will last much longer than that.

Authorities are saying that the Mississippi River could stay at flood stage for more than a month.

The economic damage, the property damage and the loss of crops is going to be incalculable.

It is important to understand that this is just not another flood. This is literally a history changing nightmare.

Folks, brace yourself. The worst from this disaster is yet to come. The ramifications could be felt for many years from now.

You better believe things are going to get interesting. Here's to hoping we stick together and work with each other to get through this.

This will dwarf Katrina. Will we see the same approach with the governmen? What will food prices do?

This is on-going doom.

The earthquakes my happen when they do, but a lack of food from the bread basket of society is a fear I think the OP is pertaining too. And yes I do think the ramifications from this we'll in itself be history changing. Add that to the Power Plant accident along the same waterway and the untold amount of pollution released and catastrophic loss of spring crops.... could be a real interesting summer for sure

Some people expect something BIG to happen soon. A HUGE earthquake that will divide the United States in half and it will be EPIC and MILLIONS will die or be displaced.

I sort of believed that, but what I am seeing now is actually the opposite. The United States will be divided I think, but what if there is no HUGE EPIC earthquake. What if instead, we are just slowly flooded, over the course of weeks.

Everyone will be asleep.

You will turn on the news and you will hear "Here a flood there a flood everywhere a flood flood" and you will turn the television off because it will be repetitive and boring to you.

You may say in passing "Pity those poor folks over there. Yes, I am so glad I don't live over there. We really must get together and do something charitible for those folks over there."

It will be "over there and over there" But it will slowly be inching towards YOU.

At first you won't believe it, and then you will get concerned. And then it will be on you and almost too late. You will be forced to evacuate. If you are lucky, you might have a relative that you can stay with. If you are lucky you might be educated enough or skillful enough to actually get a job some place and start over. But you will be competing with others who are also evacuating and trying to start over.

Eventually tensions will rise. People will be desperate. They will want to blame someone. This will happen slowly so people may blame God for it, because it will look like a lot of natural disasters, a lot of little ones happening over weeks, not some big epic thing.

People will also be desperate and blaming each other. They will come to hate anyone not like themselves. Some people will be desperate and they will begin to steal or kill for things. Then people will see it happening and say "Those blacks are always doing stuff like that." Or "Those poor white trash people coming over to our state from over there, they are nothing but trouble."

There will be race wars, you can bet.

It is what the powers that be want. Why try to destroy us when we can do just fine destroying ourselves? They will have us fighting our own war and they can just sit back and watch us destroy ourselves.

Why is it that every year is "The Worst Flood Ever"?

Every year, I see the same guy paddling his couch with a banjo.

Some rookie reporter up to their waste in water.

Hello...Wake up...It's the Friggin Mississippi River.

It seems rebuilding these towns, is the town's only industry.

You are describing much of how things were for us in south louisiana after katrina. Refugees came here, crime rate shot up, cops were over worked and overwhelmed (my dad was a cop for almost 30 years and quit even though he was only a couple years away from retirement because things got so bad for them), people were frustrated and just wanted everyone shipped out - which they eventually did, all the way to texas.

You may be onto something. The only time I hear about the floods is when I log on here. The news about it isn't nearly as in my face as lingering royal wedding crap and Bin Laden talk. People aren't talking about the flooding here at all. And I thought the coverage and concern over the flooding in Australia was a bit lacking! This is my own country and it's not getting anyone's attention who isn't in the direct path of the flooding. Baaaa baaaa baaaa. Sheep.

God forbid an epic flood should spoil your plans. Don't worry. They plan on blowing the floodways and sacrificing countless communities throughout southwest Louisiana to try and protect new orleans.

Honestly, I don't know why people would want to live in a flood plain of a river if you know that there was a chance of flood each year...

They are about to intentionally flood places that never flood. I'm on the border of the red for this week. No telling if I'll be in the red next week. I'm not in a flood zone. We never flood. No one here has flood insurance. So if they flood us out to save those who actually live on the river in the flood zones, it's somehow our fault???

I believe the record is 49 feet which happened in the 40's or something like that

The reason they build levees is to prevent a river from flooding its flood plain so that people can build on the flat ground that is produced by the annual flooding of the river. Without these levees the natural flood zone of the Mississippi River is quite large.
