Tsunami Warning Issued After Magnitude 7.9 Earthquake Strikes Northern Japan

Japan was struck by a magnitude 7.9 earthquake off its northeastern coast Friday, shaking buildings in Tokyo for several minutes and prompting a tsunami warning.

Japan's meteorological agency warned that a tsunami as high as 20 feet (6 meters) could strike the coast near Miyagi prefecture, closest to the epicenter. Smaller tsunamis of up to 50 centimeters reached some coastal communities, the agency said.

HONOLULU — The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii has widened its tsunami warning to include Hawaii and the rest of the Pacific Ocean.

The warning issued Thursday at 9:31 HST p.m. follows a massive earthquake that has struck off the northeastern coast of Japan. It says the estimated earliest arrival in Hawaii of the first tsunami wave is 2:59 a.m. HST Friday.

The warning also includes Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and Central and South America. The coast of North America is not included in the warning.

Tsunami warnings are issued due to the imminent threat of a tsunami.

This is huge!!! A twenty foot wave could hit a section of Japan. I hope that it does not materialize into a real tsunami. Remember the wave in 2004? It killed 250,000 people. I do not remember getting a figure on how big the wave was for that tsunami. I wonder if this has anything to do with the 20 year moon maximum

It is an 8.8! if you leave near the water in Japan or anywhere in that area or if you know people there get out of let them know!

It would have been considered a 9.8 a couple years ago. They changed it a few years back so that the numbers wear one point down. I do not know what to google if any one has any info on this please post it.
