UK plans to block all porn in effort to protect children

www.rawstory.com

As Britain finds itself in the middle of the political maelstrom surrounding WikiLeaks' Julian Assange, and the debate over Internet freedom resulting from his arrest on an Interpol warrant, British authorities are stepping up their efforts to wield more control over the Internet.

The UK's coalition government is discussing a plan that would see all pornographic websites automatically blocked in an effort to keep children from accessing them.

"It's for the children"

Wow, I must say. Britain has done it again! First with the Student ed costs, and now the first step at Internet censorship. Expect America to follow hand-in-hand! I think this will be worse than Asia's seize on pornography before, and now, that certain body parts must either be pixelated or blocked out completly. I'm not mad because they are taking away UK's porn, but because this is just the first step of many. But seriously. They will literally filter your IP thorugh, and will have to 'opt in' to see some naked women!

Yea, I heard this on the news earlier too and was pretty shocked. Guess I better start downloading to my hard drive quickly

Anyway, on a more serious note- what's next? Mandatory "cotton-wool coats" for every child? There has to be a line drawn somewhere. Surely in this case it is the parents responsibility to check what their child is viewing whilst on the pc. Common sense would also dictate that chat rooms/social networking sites are much more of a danger to children, due to the paedophile/grooming issue.

If they did that in the states, it would end the economy. The internet's primary purpose is porn over here.

I was listening to NPR and heard about UN (I think) conferences taking place to discuss internet censorship. This has gotten outrageous. If it happens there will be pirate internet for sure.

Forget about wikileaks, this will be the thing to take down every politician who would approve of it. By the time their next election came (if we make it through the porn riots), their male demographic of voters would be right around 0%.

Actually, this could make an effective character attack in elections...

"My opponent wants to send you back to the days of hiding in the bathroom looking at the lady's section of the Sear's catalog!"

This is the next stage, controlling the internet because it's a very dangerous tool to anyone who is doing something wrong or shady, basically many of the rich people do bad things and don't want it exposed, put online and piped to millions of people in a matter of moments.

Australia have done something alone thee lines and they used the "it's for the children" excuse as well. It seemed to work there so no doubt it will here as well. It's another brick on the load and i'm hoping soon enough that load will get a little to heavy for the general public and the reaction will be swift.

And hey students love porn, if you think the tuition fee rise caused them to march, imagine no porn marches!

Yes they do.

And yeah, I suppose they will lose their male supporters because of this. It doesn't look too good over there in the UK right about now...

For the love of God, all these governments need to do is watch Starwars - notably 2 scenes.

The first from the Princess -

"The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems that will slip through your fingers"

and

"So this is how Liberty dies... With thunderous applause".

We are doomed to repeat history while at the same time, a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, ignore the hidden social messages from our favorite shows / movies.

The Government always fails to do one thing - They never bother to look at the manner in which these movies end, shich is to say usually not good for the Government in power.

I for one do not care for pornography nor do I want children to have access to it but as far as censorship your right it is the first of many steps to telling us what we can and cannot view and that I have a big problem with that.I'm sure that there are other ways to insure children don't or can't click on porn. With my children I always kept the family computer in a place that I had full view of what they were looking at,the second thing I did was to actually use the parent controls, now isn't that a novelty? The third thing I did was talk to my children about porn ,what it was and what it was about, another novelty huh?I sure didn't need the help of my government officials to help me one way or the other, they need to stay out of our personal affairs and make the parents responsible to their children.

I don't think they will shut down porn anytime soon in America. 90% of our internet is porn, 1% conspiracy theories, .001% true conspiracy theories, 5% sports, 1% news, 1% complete nonsense, and the rest is porn. So if they block access to porn sites in america, it would essentially be shutting down the internet completely.
A side note, I've always wondered where they get sooooo many women to take pictures of. Are they all just computer simulated women? Either that or there are ALOT of freaky women who like to get naked for a camera.

It's already going on to a point, now i'm honestly not a big porn user (yes that's the truth) but i know the current UK laws surrounding it. The UK has banned certain fetish porn, along with violent porn, i don't know why people like these things but each to their own, it is fantasy afterall. Violent porn, including hardcore S&M can get you 3 years in prison if you possess it.

So i don't think it is out of the governments scope to expand this ban, all in the name of the children of course.

To me its simple matter

Guranteeing a persons right to be able to look at porn is just as paramount as guranteeing a persons right to look at the bible. Without the balance, we move from freedom to a moral dictatorship where teh thought police reign supreme.

Its a balancing act, and to ar to either side it all falls down.

Also its the UK, and the young Prince is engaged. Maybe they are just gearing up to head off any hidden snapshots that the media might get when violating the Roayls privacy. They have not had any decent sex scandals as of late.. We are due.

ATSers = predominantly male users, many of whom are internet-savvy, most are not conservatively religious.

And there is ONE FLAG on the "UK Government considers banning pornography"???

I mean, seriously. I'm not saying people are pretending they don't like porn or something (??) but if ATS can't stand up for our internet rights in a subject (and one so close to our collective heart), who will?!?!

I'm the sort of person who very rarely watches porn (believe it or not,
I guess most probably won't), but I can't imagine what would happen if governments tried to ban it.

Serious issues to consider - will the ban on porn make porn go underground? Will that lead to an influx of abused women (even more so than there already are)? Will this in fact lead to different sexual habits and practices within the nations where access is restricted? If people can't get their 'satisfaction' from a bit of reasonable non-perverse pornography, will they resort to questionable real-life behaviour instead? Would a pirate internet be even more likely to feature sadistic and perverse pornography, snuff films and the like? Would it give a new bootlegging market to the mob?

Risky stuff being considered by these mostly well-born chaps in the UK leadership (most of whom are wealthy enough to get escort girls - or boys - for their kicks)...

Serendipitous to be sure. All of sudden, the UK wants to control the internet to stop children from seeing pornography. The British populous is now awash in studies linking hairy palms, cross eyed-ness, and general deviate behavior to viewing porn.

Let's see, the internet has been alive and kicking en masse for about 20 years now. Ironically, it has been 20 years porn has been alive and kicking on the internet. But we need to shut it down NOW! TODAY! The fact this comes directly on the heels of the Wikileaks putting the Parliament and TPTB in a bad light is PURELY coincidental. We have to save the children by controlling the internet!!! Think of the children good man!!!

Please do not get me wrong. I agree children should not be viewing naughty things on the net. There are, at last count, 5000 and 1 different software products out there to help parents ensure the kids are protected. Not to mention just plain, old fashion parental intervention. If I lived in the UK, I would wonder why I need MPs to assist me? Thanks, but no thanks.
