Grimsvotn Volcano, Iceland
A possible eruption has begun at Grimsvotn volcano, Iceland. A flood has started in Gigja in south-east Iceland. The disturbance occurred under the Vatnajokull glacier near Grimsvotn Volcano on Sunday afternoon. There was an increase in flow of water by 30 cm but other rivers running from the glacier are dry. The flood may take 4-5 days to reach maximum. On Sunday the volume of water in Gigja was 130 cubic metres per second, and electrolyte levels double that of normal. Grimsvotn is the most active volcano in Iceland.

Grimsvötn volcano is located under Vatnajökull ice cap in central Iceland. Two major volcanic centers lie beneath the ice, the Bardarbunga volcanic centre and the Grimsvötn volcanic centre. Grimsvötn centre is the more active of the two. About every 5-10 years glacial melting causes large floods (jökulhlaup) on the sandur plain. Eruptions at Grimsvotn Volcano are phreatomagmatic.

What has begun?

You say that the volcano has erupted and state "It has begun" could you please elaborate for me what this eruption has started or is a part of. I am sorry but I do not know, as I have not been reading threads lately, or heard anything like this on the news.

AHHHH!!!

Wait, how do we know how big the eruption was? What happens if it is a small one and really doesn't do any damage to anything?

Do we know if it is a big one?

Thanks for the info.

Lava and water is a bad combination.

You get a lot of fine ash from this type volcanic eruptions.

You also get very violent eruptions.

Morning all,

Just had a look at the graph around there.

hraun.vedur.is...

There's actually "something" going on.
The 2-4 Hz (blue one) is unusual high since a couple of days and now clearly above the red one. Normally it's the opposite.

I am not convinced it has erupted but something could be breeding there.
