Here is the linkie thingie to the story

Why does it take scientists a long time to figure out the "if it works for us, it doesn't mean it works everywhere" rule?

The laws of physics, chemistry and what could also be signs of life ..... change .... in other solar systems.

thanks for the story, but this probably belongs in space exploration.

thanks

I don't see what the problem is here, thy have to base their knowledge on something don't they? Which is why hope and expect to see similar properties to the planets in our solar system on other planets.

As they say, they might have to go back to the drawing board.

So let me ask you a question.

Since you seem to disagree that pointing it at planets that they think are similar to ours is the wrong way to go about it, you are in charge of where the Keplar spacecraft points, where do you point it?

Point in the general direction laser signals are coming from?

That would be here, then.

That will save a bit of money!

You can't just luck for life where you think iy may be found!!!
You have to broaden your horizons more. How many times has
life turned up on our own planet, in some of the most inhospitable
places, on land or under water.
So going by that, i'd say life could exist anywhere in the universe,
and it's more widespread than we can imagine.

Looking for methane
Why because Velikovsky said so.

They must have checked for the blue color first.
Blue Man Group ... No search for methane velikovsky Neptune

Not much different except for accepted science 2nd and 3rd hits.

# Neptune The outer third is a mixture of heated gases comprised of hydrogen, helium, water and methane. Methane gives Neptune its blue cloud color. ... www.solarviews.com/eng/neptune.htm - Cached - Similar

# Neptune l Neptune facts, pictures and information. Neptune's blue color is largely the result of absorption of red light by methane in the atmosphere but there is some additional as-yet-unidentified ... nineplanets.org/neptune.html - Cached - Similar

Except they must have determined the lack of methane a different way and not
from any blue color.
ED: Wow from the OP reference:

Earth-sized planets over the next few years, so the scientists will have plenty of promising targets to pursue. Methane floating alongside oxygen could be compelling evidence of biological activity.

Jupiter with methane and Venus came from Jupiter and showered Earth with rocks and
bugs from Velikovsky. So giant Bugs on Jupiter like in the Alien movie. Too bad Velikovsky
wasn't around to pocket some story rights.

It is possible that physical laws change in other solar systems, but unlikely. Although it cannot be proven, the assumption that local physical laws are universal, or change only slightly over very large areas of time and space, has been extremely useful. Scientists are puzzled by the carbon monoxide to methane ratio they have deduced on this exo-planet because they have no direct experience of such an environment. The atmospheric models they have developed by observation of the nearest gas giants are based on a particular range of temperatures, etc. There is nothing to suggest that any physical laws are being broken, simply that we have not had enough experience to model these new conditions properly. That said, it is altogether possible that these anomalous observations may reflect previously unknown metabolic processes... but these processes will either be explainable by simple organic chemistry, or will expand or refine our understanding of it.

As for the question of "where to look for life?" Quite simply, all that we know suggests that organic life will flourish just about anywhere it can get a toe-hold. If finding slime mold on a cold rock in space were the object of SETI, they would have a lot of difficult territory to cover. Their objective is much narrower, however: they are looking for extra-terrestrial intelligence, in other words, someone we can talk with. This narrows the options immensely. They are looking for beings that communicate using technologies similar to our own, with basic thought processes and languages similar to our own. Evolution suggests that environments similar to our own will produce such beings. On our own planet, there are beings, dolphins and whales, that seem to have a high degree of intelligence and the ability to communicate. Despite living on the very same planet, and despite decades of research, we have been unable to establish communication. There are many who insist that these fellow terrestrials just aren't that smart or communicative in the first place. The point is that if we want to know for sure that we've found intelligent life, it's going to have to be a lot like us, which means it makes sense to look for planets like ours.

OK then. We can't be everywhere like Johnny Cash.
If there was news the MSN would be on the scene to give
us the scoop.
Or is the MSN prevented in some way.
As conspiracy theorists might say.
Every conspiracy needs a "Pentagon Papers" type of definite
solid source to settle the problem.
Yeah wipe out conspiracies.
That will be the day.
