CARLSBAD: Shots Fired, Two Children Hit At Kelly Elementary

www.nctimes.com

Two children were shot in the arm Friday afternoon at Kelly Elementary School by a man who reportedly carried a gun in one hand and a jack-o-lantern or a can of gasoline in the other, according to police and witnesses.

Carlsbad Police Lt. Kelly Cain said the suspected gunman in the 12:30 p.m. shooting was arrested, and that there doesn't appear to be any other "threat" to the school or the central Carlsbad neighborhood.

Two children were shot in the arm but have survived, thank God. A man carrying a jack o lantern or carrying gasoline open fired into a field with children playing.

He has been tackled by construction workers, and was carrying a 357 handgun.

WitnessJordon Sears said he thought he saw the triggerman ---- with a gun and a jack-o-lantern ---- fire five or six shots while walking sideways in front of the school.

"It looked like he was shooting at kids," Sears said.

The school, located at 4885 Kelly Drive, was placed on lockdown, but the children might be escorted to meet their parents sometime soon, according to police radio scanner traffic. Parents of the approximately 450 students at the school are being told to go to Laguna Riviera Park on Kelly Drive and Park Drive.

He's in for a wold of hurt when he gets to prison. Many of the inmates already there have children of their own, and do no take kindly to a grown adult harming children.

I look forward to his sentencing.

EDIT: I just realized I have little cousins up in Carlsbad. I hope they don't go to that school.

More from the article.
What would posses a man to do such a thing! Thank God the children are ok, however what trauma.
What is the world coming to!

Authorities originally said the only injuries connected to the noon-time shooting were to people with scrapes and bruises, but officials later said one person was taken away by air ambulance. In a short news conference, police said two children were hurt, but their wounds were not serious. The age or condition of the patient taken to Children's Hospital by helicopter is not yet known.

"Looked like maybe two injuries, but I'm not sure if that wasn't from kids running away ... they looked stable," Chandler said.

What's up with all these shootings?

Does it have to do with medication? Is post-modern life just causing some people to totally lose it? I think it's more complicated than this just being an "evil man"....

How long before the ignorant Europeans (and Americans for that matter) to come in here to spew their predictable "THIS IS WHY AMERICA SHOULDN'T HAVE GUNS

The big problem with taking away our guns is that it leaves the criminals with guns, don't think for a minute that they cannot get them, I don't know what the solution is but it isn't taking away our guns.

in my opinion, had this happened in europe, there would have been no "construction workers tackling the shooter".

the good little citizens would have waited for the police to show up to handle it, and all the kids would have been killed in the meantime.

standard procedure.

Hi Lurker,
If you looked at inivux's mood it says apathetic, that is not in keeping with his/her posts, which are emotionally based.

Here is for the man who most likely saved many lives.
Sad that the world has come to this. I hope the children are ok, and the familes have a lot of support. My heart goes out to all of the children, parents, teachers.

While I normally would not advocate running someone over in a truck, this seemed the only thing to do.
And this is why everyone should be able to lawfully own a personal weapon, and defend themself.

A gunman opened fire on a crowded school playground Friday, grazing two young children with bullets before construction workers tackled him, authorities said.

The suspect parked his car around noon, jumped a fence and opened fire as he walked across campus in the north San Diego suburb, said Carlsbad police Lt. Kelly Cain. The students, ages 6 and 7, were not seriously injured.

The suspect, a man in his 40s or 50s whose name was not released, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, Cain said. He is believed to have acted alone.

"He is possibly a transient who lives in the area," Cain said. "He is not cooperating with the investigation. He probably has some mental health issues."

Scott Chandler was repairing a Jet Ski in his driveway when he heard two loud bangs and saw children running and screaming. He ran downhill in his flip-flops and saw several men struggling on the side of the road.

As he approached the crowd, he saw bullets fall out of the suspect's pocket.

"I just started yelling him, 'Why are you shooting kids?'" Chandler said. "His face was in the dirt, his teeth were in the dirt, and he just grunted."

Construction worker Carlos Partida told KGTV-TV that he ran to his truck after he saw the suspect leave the playground.

"I hit him with my truck," he said.

Well there is more to the story, I am disturbed.

My sincere thanks to the construction workers!! A lot of children won't want to go back to school now and a lot of parents won't want their children out of their site. No place seems to be safe any more, this is really sad!

This kind of thing fires me up. Dont talk about gun control, because Aquarius1 said it right: Then only criminals would have guns... The worst part is he'll probably get out in 2-4 and then kill someone; but plead insanity and released again. It's the liberal way of thinking that allows this crap to continue. These people supposedly have rights, but I say if you commit an act of violence especially to a child, you should lose any rights. Eye for an eye: shoot him. In the head. In public. Maybe people will think twice.

The children would understand that he died because he tried to hurt them. They would feel safe knowing that anyone who tried to hurt them wouldn't be able to ever again.

Shooter has been identified as Brendan O'Rourke, 41.
pic of the gunman:
img88.imageshack.us...

www.signonsandiego.com...
Scott Chandler... looked at the schoolyard and saw the shooter dressed in black pants and a black hooded sweatshirt, “dressed just like a bad guy.” ...
The Sheriff’s Department and FBI were helping with the investigation.
[Once again, the feds get involved. This means it is probably a covert op.]

www.cbs8.com...
"He is possibly a transient who lives in the area," Cain said. ...
[Though the suspect's car looked to be a pretty new full-size sedan]
comments section:
--"Why are you circling helicopter?s all around Carlsbad after the midday shooting at the primary school?... They were still there at dusk. How is that helping the situation??"
[Were they searching for another suspect?]

The estimated age of the suspect is all over the map:

www.cbs8.com...
The suspect, a man in his 40s or 50s... was arrested...

www.nbcsandiego.com...
Chandler said he thought the gunman was in his mid-40s and that the suspect had short gray hair and was wearing a black hoodie and pants.

www.10news.com...
"He was probably Caucasian, mid-30s. He was wearing a big jacket,"

www.signonsandiego.com...
He was described by witnesses as 20 to 30 years old, clean-shaven, with short hair.
[The pictured suspect is not at all clean-shaven.]

www.10news.com...
One neighbor said that the person taken into custody looked to be about 15 or 16 years old, but another witness said the person looked to be in his 20s....

from the comments section;
"Was it a teenager or a man in his mid 40s? Hearing mixed reports form different news stations..."
