Does ET live on Goldilocks planet? How scientists spotted

www.dailymail.co.uk

An astronomer picked up a mysterious pulse of light coming from the direction of the newly discovered Earth-like planet almost two years ago, it has emerged.

Dr Ragbir Bhathal, a scientist at the University of Western Sydney, picked up the odd signal in December 2008, long before it was announced that the star Gliese 581 has habitable planets in orbit around it.

Interesting. I wonder what this could have been. Any budding astrologist on here that might be able to provide a plausible explanation for this ?

I wonder how long it will be, until we can make more detailed observations on the second earth there ?

As stimulating as this all is, I wont be holding my breath for long.

I believe this topic is currently being discussed here.

Edit to add: Around late Sept 2009 Ragbir emailed somone concerning this discover stating:

Hi xxxx,

Thanks for your email. I think a couple of people from the European press made a mistake and associated my work with the work on extra-solar planets. I am carrying out a search for ETI in the optical spectrum. We are looking for laser pulse signals from outer space.

The signal we detected came from the southern constellation Tucanae. Please find attached the signal for your use in your publications.
We are still in the process of trying to figure out whether it is an ETI signal.

Cheers.

Ragbir

Source.

Mystery solved, someone confused Gliese with southern constellation Tucanae.

Who agrees we should answer and send one back?
First a constant beam of light until they get aware and the prime numbers. xD

Just a minor correction.. But Astrologists deal with Astrology. You know the alignment of the stars and how it will affect your day, all that stuff.. Astrology is like a pseudo-science.

Astronomers deal with Astronomy, which is the study of outer space and its movements, etc. Astronomers are the ones you wanna talk to about distant planets

Agreed, there was no signal from Gliese it was from an entirely different part of the universe.
It seems in all the excitement things tend to get a bit muddled up.

This has almost become too painful lately. Why don't they just, in one swipe, tear off this ET bandaid of ours and just get it over with?
We know that they know, they know more than what they're sharing with us. Maybe not these particular scientific institutes but most certainly, NASA knows more.
Why are they allowing scientists to waste their time and money 'finding' something that was already found? Of course this is speculative at best, but I am just going with my gut feelings from all that I've read.
Hmmmm, Gary McKinnon comes to mind and the fact that Obama got involved speaks volumes (I love how they're making it seem like McKinnon is mentally challanged now)

woah....it has just now emerged that he detected this mysterious pulse of light? how often are these 'mysterious pulses' happening? makes you wonder how many mysterious transmissions or mysterious other things are happening all the time, and perhaps scientists are just too against the idea of other life to investigate them further. all of a sudden we realize one of these things may be coming from this rare planet and they're interested.

The signal did not come from the Gliese system. Not anywhere near the Gliese system. It came from 47 Tucanae, about half way across the sky from Gliese.

Gliese RA 15 19 26.82 Dec -07 43 20.2
Tucanae RA 00 24 .0567 Dec -72 04 52.6

In December 2008 a sharp laser look alike signal emanating from 47 Tucanae was detected. However, further searches in the same region have failed to detect the signal again.

This was already determined like five posts before yours. Perhaps read the thread before you copypasta?
