Am I alone when I say I had no clue this was out there?

They should start showing this thing to school kids. I'm going to start recycling more.

The patch itself is about as large as The State Of Alaska. This is where all of that garbage that people place in sewers grates, rivers, water bodies all ends up after a few years.

Woah, that's bad!

3.5 million tonnes of the stuff just floating around in the ocean? How the hell does this happen?

Nice find OP, S+F

wow, I am surprised no one has blamed the illuminati for this yet..
But seriously... what can be done about it, nothing... If anyone tries to create any programs to help solve this, it will be lobbied againt, because there is no money for this.... they gave it all to the banks....

There is more then just one patch, as I recall there are patches in every stream vortex in the oceans.

edit to add the guy in the video says it's too late, that nothing can be done about it now. With the increase use of plastics throughout the world in developing countries there is no hope for the ocean. All very depressing

I know for sure you are not alone, but I'm glad you are now aware of the situation. I'd just like point out a couple of websites that address the problem, educates and work with providing solutions.

And then there's also the thoughts of turning it into an island. There's a thread or two around here about the island and the Pacific flotilla for that matter too.
