The river shown in the photographs is the Caristales, which is located near the town of La Macarena in Colombia , South America .

The river, world famous for its colorful display, has been called:"the river that ran away to paradise," "the most beautiful river in the world" and "the river of five colors".

During Colombia 's wet season, the water flows fast and deep, obscuring the bottom of the river and denying the mosses and algae that call the river home the sun that they need. During the dry season there is not enough water to support the dazzling array of life in the river. But during a brief span between the wet and dry seasons, when the water level is just right, the many varieties of algae and moss bloom in a dazzling display of colours. Blotches of amarillo , blue, green, black and red - and a thousand shades in between - coat the river.

The part of the river where the colourful blooms occur is quite isolated and is not accessible by road. Adventurous tourists can now fly into La Macarena and then make their way to to the river site on foot as part of guided tours. The site was effectively closed to tourists for several years because of guerrilla activity in the region along with concerns about the impact of unregulated tourist traffic. However, the site was re-opened to visitors in 2009.

So far, some 1,000 people have visited Caristales, including around 100 foreign tourists.

The tours will follow four clearly marked and authorized paths and one is no longer permitted to stay overnight or cook, as this was ruining the area previously.

I never knew a river with such vibrant colors existed, a very cool find for me.

It would be nice to visit this place some time, sounds like its being well preserved now, so hopefully it will one day be possible for me to make it there.

Hope everyone enjoyed these images as much as i did.

Those pictures are absolutely beautiful. I have never heard of this river or seen it before. Wow! Simply amazing. It reminds me of art, natural art! The colors are so bright and noticeable, I love it.

Makes me think of Monet.

This planet has so many beautiful places too bad we are destroying it. I sure hope we realize this soon and start to appreciate what our planet has to offer
I really love seeing that places like this are still here and haven't been destroyed by development. I hope it stays that way.

That river is stunning
would love to go there and take photos.

Heres another pretty sight:

The Blue Grotto in Italy

The Blue Grotto is a spectacular accident of nature. Found on the Italian island of Capri, this soft limestone cave is suffused by an eerie blue light. The light comes from another underwater entrance to the cave and is reflected off the white cave floor. Roman emperors supposedly used the grotto as a private bath.

CZ
Just because it’s in another country that you fear does not mean you cannot travel there. This shows how ignorant some people are about the world around them. Yes if you only hear negative news about the country your going to base your whole view on that. Good job. Remain ignorant.

SS
Same goes to you. Let me ask you how many tourist traps are in the United States? Just for the sole purpose of taking your money, identity, and life? The US is no different from Colombia. The only reason you don’t hear about it is because its not national news. I myself am frightened to go to some places in the US. I will not visit my friends in the south for fear of going missing myself. How many people go missing in Europe? In Italy? Hell in France? How many of those are travelers?

Colombia currently has a thriving tourist trade. People are realizing its not how the news media claims it to be. They arrive at the country and are surprised at how clean it is, how nice the people are, how friendly everyone is. Yes I will admit that it does have its bad zones, but I dare you to name ONE city, not country but city, that DOES NOT have a bad area.

Yes I am from Colombia.

Also if you’re going to insult someone/place/thing at least spell it right.

Why is it that someone must always come along and feel as though they must chastise other posters for a little lighthearted humor ? I assume SSimon was only being humorous .

I'm also assuming CZ's statement could have been taken several different ways but , you automatically assumed the worst .

The river is indeed amazing and I would love to see it but , it's in Colombia so , I never will . Don't interpret that as a fear of going to Colombia .

Nobody here had insulted Colombia until you posted what you did . That was the only insulting post in this thread so far . Let's not turn a good thread into something that only you have perceived it to be .

Good find , Alaskan Man . Thanks for sharing this .

Absolutely amazing...

I wonder... how consistent is the "brief span" and how brief is brief? Scheduling a trip down there might actually be pretty tough to do. Mother Nature doesn't exactly have a reputation for being cooperative.

Only 1000 tourists so far? Maybe we all better stop flagging this thread, not sure I want 10,000 or 100,000 to trample this treasure. jk (sort of).

I dunno...that doesn't look very safe to drink to me...I think I'll stick with "the river of one color" that flows through my property...
