Mexican and U.S. authorities were “secretly scrambling” last month to thwart an alleged plot by a Mexican drug cartel to blow up a Texas dam and unleash billions of gallons of water along the U.S.-Mexico border, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Mexico's Zeta cartel planned the attack to get back at its rival, the Gulf cartel, which controls smuggling routes from the Falcon Dam to the Gulf of Mexico, Sigifredo Gonzalez, sheriff of Texas' Zapata County, told the Chronicle.

This story is making its way around since yesterday and it looks like the border violence may be about to take on a new dimension. Although there is some discussion as to just how much explosives would be needed for the cartels to actually take out the dam, it reads like there were small amounts of dynamite found near the dam.

What will it take before someone actually tries to do something about our southern border, besides leaving it open for everyone to cross over?

Zetas ranks are Mexican military defectors who were trained in special forces tactics, including demolition. A U.S. border law enforcement official told the Chronicle the warnings originated in part by the seizure of small amounts of dynamite near the dam, and the discovery of a copy of the alert on the Mexican side of the border.
The incompetence of the Obamanation will eventually lead to a catastrophe, dwarfing 9/11.

I definitely agree something needs to be done, and soon. This problem has been ongoing now for how many administrations? And it seems that all this admin wants to do is argue about how misguided a State law is when the reality is the stakes are being raised everyday. It is a matter of time before something really goes bad. Oh yeah, then they will simply play the blame game from a different angle.

It may have been derailed by a stepped-up presence by the Mexican military, which was acting in part on intelligence from the U.S. government, sources said.

2)Credibility Issue?

Officers interviewed by the Chronicle gave the warning varying degrees of credibility.

A Mexican military spokesman, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said he had not heard of any threat to the Falcon Dam and expressed doubt that the Zetas would try such an attack.

3) Warnings- Why would Zetas give warning knowing this would alert authorities?

With handbills and bullhorns, members of the Zeta cartel are said to have warned the civilian population on the Mexican side of the river near the dam to get out of the area, according to residents and intelligence information from law enforcement officials.

4) US Law enforcement giving out vital information

Capt. Francisco Garcia, of the Roma (Texas) Police Department, said there was no way to know what the traffickers were capable of doing, but bringing down the dam would require nearly a tractor-trailer full of dynamite.

“As far as blowing it up — making it fall apart completely — it would have to be something like 9/11,” he said. “By the time they'd start to do something, there will be so much law enforcement there it'd be ridiculous.”

Why would a law enforcement tell everyone exactly how much dynamite would be needed? Furthermore, how would he know the exact amount?

It's like there is a conspiracy against the US of A and nobody told us.
Now the Mexican drug cartels are taking a lesson from Islamic fundamentalists and it's happeining right under our very noses.

If you want to stop border drug violence, there is a relatively simple solution.

Remove their power. Drug gangs power come from being the only source of said drugs. If we had reasonable drug policies and some actual research(ie. not agenda driven) was done on the effects of various drugs on humans, then this would be a non issue.

If we would simply end the drug war, end prohibition, drug cartels would be a thing of the past because it would no longer be a lucrative business transporting what is usually inferior product over the border. The risk would far outweigh the benefits.

The reason these drug cartels make so much money and as a result have so much power, is directly related to our prohibition of those substances.

decriminalize the product, reduce the prices to nothing and eliminate the crime.

Here lies the problem with that 2theC. We could then no longer imprison otherwise law abiding citizens.

The prison industrial complex is one of the few growth industries left in this country. With better than 80% of the current prison population being non violent drug offenders, we might have to close down some prisons! Prison guards would lose their jobs!

What a shame.

The threat turned out to be false.

The Texas Department of Public Safety sent a bulletin to area agencies that clearly stated intelligence about the possible threat was unconfirmed by other sources, authorities said.

The response is just one in a series of recent hazards investigated by U.S. authorities based on intelligence that later proved to be false.

U.S. federal authorities later determined that the dynamite seizure referenced in the bulletin never took place. They have since concluded that there was never a serious threat to the dam.

This may be something to keep an eye on in the next few days to see if anything else is made public about it. As jam321 pointed out there are a couple of things that are kind of iffy. I'm thinking the LE was just speaking out loud, but the fact that the Zetas gave a warning to the Mexican side of the border, just seems a bit out of character to me.

So what you're telling me jam is that this story was completely fabricated from the start only to instill fear in the people of texas. Why am I not surprised, when I saw the headline my bull# detector went off.

Drug cartels have absolutely no reason at all to blow up a dam. That would only serve to tighten security on the border(what a novel idea) thus actually hurting their business.
