Prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu convened his inner cabinet Saturday night, March 12, to discuss the spiraling crisis with Washington and his first response.

DEBKAfile's military and Washington sources report: The Obama administration is considering withholding from Israel military items urgently needed in case of a flare-up of hostilities with Iran. This would further ratchet up the mounting row over Israel's decision to build another 1,600 homes in E. Jerusalem. The requests were filed by defense minister Ehud Barak as recently as Feb. 26, when he visited Washington and met defense secretary Robert Gates and secretary of state Hillary Clinton.

In an exceptionally harsh phone call to Netanyahu Friday, March, Clinton herself hinted at this possibility while administering a dressing-down on the East Jerusalem housing decision and its announcement during Vice president Joe Biden's visit.

Reporting on that phone call, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley disclosed: "The secretary said she could not understand how this happened, particularly in light of the United States' strong commitment to Israel's security."

Washington correspondents interpreted this as a threat to withhold items vital for Israel's security unless the prime minister reversed that decision (which Palestinians now demand as the precondition for resuming peace talks).

Our military sources report that the Barak arms list is tailored to a potential four-front offensive against Israel launched by Iran and its allies. It includes systems needed by the Israeli Air Force, certain types of missiles and advanced electronic equipment. During his last visit, the defense minster complained the list had been pending in Washington for more than three months and the sands for a possible conflict were running out fast. He stressed that it was essential for these items to reach Israel before a flare-up occurred. The urgency was such that he suggested that if they could not be supplied to Israel at short notice, they should at least be held ready meanwhile in the emergency stores of the US bases in Israel's Negev.
Gates promised Barak to study the list and let him have his answer in the coming days, but none has so far been received.

Some circles in the United States and many in Israel say the Obama administration is blowing the crisis up with deliberate intent. American-Jewish criticism was led Saturday night by the Anti-Defamation League's Abraham Foxman, who issued this statement: "We are shocked and stunned at the Administration’s tone and public dressing down of Israel on the issue of future building in Jerusalem," he said. "One can only wonder how far the US is prepared to go in distancing itself from Israel in order to placate the Palestinians."

Defense sources in Washington reported Saturday the view that the Obama administration, which has never cultivated warm relations with the Netanyahu government, has seized on the Jerusalem housing spat as a device for restraining Israel from attacking Iran's nuclear sites, a step which the White House strenuously opposes.

US ponders denying Israel arms needed for conflict with Iran

If true, could this behind the scenes policy be linked to the ramping up of tensions up in the West Bank:

Israel extends West Bank lockdown

UN: Threats risk fresh Lebanon-Israel war

Strident threats of war are continuing to risk a fresh conflict between Lebanon and Israel, the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon said on Friday.

Speaking after briefing UN Security Council members in New York on the implementation of Resolution 1701, Michael Williams said that bellicose warnings coming from Beirut and Tel Aviv were “utterly unhelpful.”

“This rhetoric and brinkmanship contravenes that very spirit of Resolution 1701,” Williams told reporters on Friday evening.

The consequences of this US policy could backfire & produce the opposite of intended results, and rather than forcing Israel to live with a nuclear Iran, it pushes Israel into a corner where they instead choose to provoke their enemies into a conflict (which wouldn't be too difficult).

So what do you think of debka's analysis? Are Israel being forced into accepting a nuclear Iran by Obama, and will it work?

IMO in the last few days we are seeing evidence of this.

I don't usually rely on debka as a reliable source, but this time they could be right.

Israel has shown time and time again that they are going to do whatever is necessary to protect themselves regardless of what ANYONE says. Just look at the history of the Israeli people - have they ever had a friend that didn't turn on them or abandon them at some point? Do you really think they will trust the US with their security? Not a chance.

This is just another amateurish move by President Zero. If the US will not supply Israel with the weapons they need to fight a conventional war against Iran then guess what - Israel will have to use their nuclear weapons. Israel isn't going to fold up their tent and go away quietly. The President needs to find himself some advisers that actually know something about other countries and the way they think.

Add to that the rise of military rabbis in the army that is turning Israel's wars into holy wars:

The rise of Israel's military rabbis

Israel's army is changing. Once proudly secular, its combat units are now filling with those who believe Israel's wars are "God's wars".

Military rabbis are becoming more powerful. Trained in warfare as well as religion, new army regulations mean they are now part of a military elite.

They graduate from officer's school and operate closely with military commanders. One of their main duties is to boost soldiers' morale and drive, even on the front line.

All this news about Israel and the earthquakes and the erosion of our rights reminds me of a game of Jenga. I find myself constantly bracing for the collapse. That's no way to live.

You speak as though Israel is the 51st state of America?
You speak as though we are obligated, in our own sour economy, to aid any rogue nation that phones us, who will not provide any mutual value to us whatsoever? I suppose you believe Khazars are Hebrews and America will be punished by "God" if we don't provide them weapons to start trouble and kill human beings? Sad news for you buddy, they aren't Hebrews and by the looks of it America is already cursed (bernie madoff, the federal reserve), and that is the result of people who think like you. you believe they should control our country and should receive trillions of dollars from us per month. where is the line drawn? why do it for khazars, what is chosen about them?
You would go so far to humiliate your own president, however unfavorible his policies to you, because he refuses to provide death machines to a non-complying apartheid state. Have you no shame? Americans have truly lost it. No wonder they make fun of you in Israel.

As long as the US doesn't assist with the INITIAL aerial bombings with Israel, then Iran attacks US bases in Iraq... The public would go along with it and want blood..

If a war with Iran starts up, the US stands to very quickly lose much of what it has so far gained in the Middle East.
There is no advantage at all in this for America.

Israel eventually loses whatever happens.

The best outcome I can see is if Russia, China, and America all agree to keep right out of it. Try to prevent world war three.

But also make it VERY CLEAR, that if Israel launches any more of it's usual false flags, then the US should totally cut Israel off entirely from any future aid, political, financial, intelligence or military.
