Date is 5th of March 2010-
Eastern Austrlia has been recently recieving massive deluges in the recent weeks. I live and work in south-east Queensland and the past week or so i have discovered some strange fungus type growths in the front garden at work.

Here are the shots...

I clock on at work at 6am and in the early morning these things are at full bloom. By 9am they are deteriorating fast. By 2pm when i clock off they are dead and have become little more than a brownish lump. I've been watching them sprout and die all week.

I have come to the conclusion they have a 24 hr life cycle. Not there when I leave work, there when i get to work, dead when I leave again.
I have done the science thing and poke them with a stick and they appear to be hollow inside the strands that interlock and they take on almost a jelly like substance. When they are dieing i've broken one open and it seems to contain a brown liquid poo like substance.

I call it..... the Uber Fungus!

Quite strange indeed.

It is a fungus called Clathrus pusillus.

I think it's clathus crispus (stinkhorn).

Here are some links: to google image results and a page about stinkhorn (in reverse order for no reason whatsoever).

Its probably just the spore making part of the fungus, like a mushroom. The mycelium continues to live underground.

I have seen tons of mushrooms pop up overnight and then wither away to nothing in the light of day.

Yes, though I would go as far to say it is ubercool.

I have devised a series of experiments I am to conduct on it next week. In the following order I am to see how it reacts to:-

*being set on fire
*being eaten by me'
*being soked in bourbon
*being put in my bosses desk drawer
*being set on fire
and lastly
*being worn as a victory hat!

also i might add that i am disappointed i couldn't name it uber fungus as it has already been named Clathrus Pusillus... though that is already quite cool...

thanks for pointing me in the right direction

Haha. That's a pretty cool mushroom, but i wouldn't eat it if i were you

It's never a good idea to eat a mushroom like that, even if it's ubercool!

You are coward! (not really) I ate even this and I'm still alive. Mushrooms are great and tasty if you know what/when/how.
