Government websites hacked by Anonymous over censorship

www.news.com.au

COMPUTER hackers disabled several Australian government websites today in coordinated attacks protesting against a planned internet filter aimed at pornography.

The attacks, confirmed by the Attorney-General's Department, crippled Australia's parliamentary website for almost an hour, including the Communications Department, which is pushing a compulsory internet filter for pornography and offensive content. ...

It was only a matter of time before they pissed off 4chan to the point where they would start fighting back. I have to keep in the back of my mind that this might be a government psy-op to shut down 4chan, but that is highly unlikely, since I believe they'd use a much bigger and more publicized attack than this. Akin to when they flooded YouTube with porn a little while back, this will probably turn out to be nothing, but if the right people get together and do enough damage to these government sites, who knows what will happen.

"Australian Parliament House website (www.aph.gov.au) was unavailable this morning for approximately 50 minutes due to a distributed denial of service attack by individuals belonging to the 'Anonymous' group. It is now back on line," a spokeswoman said.

At the time of this post, www.aph.gov.au is not loading, so I'm assuming the DDoS attacks are still going on.

[Anonymous is] the first internet-based superconsciousness. Anonymous is a group, in the sense that a flock of birds is a group. How do you know they're a group? Because they're travelling in the same direction. At any given moment, more birds could join, leave, peel off in another direction entirely.

—Landers, Chris, Baltimore City Paper, April 2, 2008.[6]

Long live Anonymous.

Yeah, because hacking a public website is how you fight Government censorship. It's only going to embolden their position and make them want to expand it further to filtering out, Oh I DUNNO, websites that give instruction on programming and websites that educate users on any kind of network security?

If you people in Australia are stupid enough to believe that's how you get policy changed then maybe you deserve to have your internet filtered.

What would people do if the internet in America was just about to be filtered?

Results 1 - 10 of about 24,200 for operation titstorm

Whoa, how long has this operation been planned for? That's a lot of results. Also, I would go in the IRC chat, but I'm afraid they might log all the IPs that go there.

Good On Ya! I beleive that here in the states we are being subjected to a slow censoring, Kinda like turning up the water sowly on a frog you wish to boil, by the time they realize it its too late, I hope that isnt where we are headed. So how should it be dealt with, when there is no voice in government, to keep free speech at the front of human rights, for the very people that the government is supposed to serve, a digital revolution is a ballsy move guys and one I hope you can come out of.

I don't know, I first heard about it today...but given the nature of anonymous, probably no more than a week. They did issue a formal press release on the 8th (Australia time) so at least two days.

*shrug*

They might. But sometimes the best hiding is done in plain sight.

I say let them have their filter, there is nothing they can do to fully censor the internet.

Just like the way the police force works....it's designed to stop crime, but there is no way to 100% stop crime.

There will be no way to 100% censor the internet.

Why allow them to get advantage on that?

Why give up your freedom?

No filters are required on the internet.

Do the government actually think they can stop people from viewing things such as 4chan and other weird sites?

Another site will be made then someone will find a loop hole in the internet so they can publish a site without it appearing in search engines and such!

G'day Nick X

The problem is that appalling Rudd's appalling plan could really slow things down.

Kind regards
Maybe...maybe not

I just wrote the most illuminating brilliant reply to your post and then accidently clicked a button and lost it all before previewing wahhhhhh!
It would have been my best post ever, now I'm deflated and have lost my eloquence but still shall say in fewer and simpler words ...
Do your research before you start name-calling an entire nation mate,
especially when this is the work of an INTERNATIONAL minority group!
It's not about porn, that's the government excuse, and I bet you the small breasted comment by Anon. is totally tongue in cheek and a big raspberry at the gov.s excuse for filtering which is very much "the emperor wears no clothes"
Think of anonymous as the kid in the crowd pointing at the emperor and the asleep and brainwashed majority as the crowd and you'd be closer to the mark...you'd have to know aussie humour though , don't ever make the mistake of taking it literally, and sarcasm abounds.

For your enlightenment....Rudd's filter (who is he? the aussie p.m. ) is based on a blacklist that they refuse to list publicly (like you they think we're too stupid -to need to know)

and sites such as Liveleak are on that list, along with various gems such as a Qld dentist.
It may well be ATS is also on that list , it having it's own whistle blowing moments and availability of real news and truth.
So sweetie , please .
Sometimes it's better to keep your mouth closed and appear a fool than open it and prove it.
Deny ignorance .

I believe that these sort of harmless "guerilla " tactics are indeed the way of the moment, certainly since msm have it now the australian idol watchers might actually know it is going on.
In this shocking world, shock tactics are needed to jolt peoples minds, and this one caught some attention, and no one got hurt. Wow.
Yeah , a really naughty, naughty bad thing they did.

Brilliant I say, and thank god SOMEONE is making a stand ...a real stand,
Brilliant brown eye, made my night reading this news item ,cheers OP.

and just to add an example of aussie humour and satire...enjoy this brilliant peace from 2007 election mania by the axis of awesome.
but maybe you got to be aussie to appreciate this piece too, cracks me up every time.

well, yes ,a proxy can be used to bypass but the point is we shouldn't have to ,freedom of speech and enough respect for our intelligence and ability as individuals to make our own choices and filter our own computers for our children, and all that.
A proxy just like some one set up and coordinated for the people of Iran in the election protests of last June.
And who would that group have been ? oh that's right that would be Anonymous.

Again no nukes,no white phosphorous but a very effective campaign for freedom. One for the people against our insubordinate employEEs...the governments of the world.
g'night all

This is to get the attention of the media to simply put it.
There was a first attack back in August 2009 on the Prime Minister's site but that failed to do anything big.
By getting the world's attention we gain the advantage, pick up steam, and drive the message and cause forward.

We are legion

We do not forgive

We do not forget

Expect us
