i was just on spaceweather today and noticed the sun is EXTREMELY active, with three sunspots currently including a Behemoth, sunspot 1045, which is ERUPTING with many "M" class Solar Flares, and there have even been numerous very loud shortwave radio bursts coming from the sun, it looks like we have a very strong chance (70%) for more "M" class Flares in the next 48 hours, even with the possibility(15%) of some "X" class Flares,

after being relatively quit for all of 2009 it seems the sun is coming out with a "bang" in 2010, is it the start of a new Solar Cycle? or is it something bigger? im interested to see if this new activity has any effect on the seismic activity here on earth.

Its just normal activity, its been going on since the sun chain reacted and will be going on until the Sun runs out of Hydrogen-Helium.

Its to soon to say if its starting to go on the maximum as expected.
The Sun can be very unpredictable, its not fixed to a particular cycle.

During 1640 and mid 1700's there was no sunspot observations made.
Could that be the cause of the mini ice age at the same time?

I think so yes.

All two days: "Explosions on the sun! OMG" here on ats.....deny ignorance.

Current: NORMAL

Do you think I dont go on these site myself or something, I do, I posted a flare image on Armageddononline.org 4 days ago.

Its not about denying ignorance, I have many astronomy books, so that shows little ignorance in my view.

ITS NORMAL ACTIVITY.

Its not going to kill us, its not the movie 2012

ITS NORMAL ACTIVITY.

has there been any verifiable activity on earth due to sun spots? I just don't know what they do to us. Or what an "X" class flare will do. Is this like "the lights might flicker" bad, or "life as you know it will end" bad? Just trying to get educated.

If the sun is unpredictable, how can you call it “normal activity”? If anything could happen at any time, then something could happen any time!

edit to add: and dont forget to run!

These mass ejections from the sun are not harmless, but they (almost) never hit earth in a direct way.

But as you know, the Sun is very far away, and earth is so small - how exact must the aim be to hit us direct.

It's like to spit on a 1mm point - in 4 Meters distance. Not impossible, but near.

Unpredictable as in with the cycles.

OMG OMG she is gonna blow lol.

Yes there has been verifiable activity due to sun spots but the last major activity with strong flares was in the late 1800's.

What we have now is more electrical equipment and satelites so its more likely that they will disrupt some satelites and electrical grids and transformers.

Yes if, and its a IF a major solar flare occured on this solar maximum, it will be a lot of work to sort out, but its not a major disaster that people will die or anything.

also like the poster says above, it also has to hit us, they do miss.

I know people who would die if you took away their cell phone. People couldn’t find their way around if they lost their GPS. Think of the traffic. It could be catastrophic! I don’t think you have thought this thru.

i was merely informing people the sun was active, if anyone was interested, not because im "freaking out man" i don't think its anything to worry about, its still interesting none the less

ATS is the only place you get up to date info regarding the sun without checking their web sites daily. I like any updates on the sun. Keep up the good work.

Thats great to hear, it is very interesting, afterall its one of the main factors what drives our climate.

Hope the Sun does wake up a little, still a bit to go yet but maybe we will have a nice summer.

Two lots of sunspot groups is still considered quiet and minimum activity.

If a flare like the earth saw in the 1850's hit now, think how things would be without our power grid! No traffic lights, heat, air conditioning, refrigeration, ATMs and no long distance communication except with tin cans and a string. That could make things get ugly.

Awesome thread , Good to have people like you that go out of their way to do research on this kind of thing, rather than having people, just comenting random boring sh1t,

Research?

Dont mean to mock the OP but it was titled " Major activity "

lol.

Its not Major activity at all, just a presumption with no research apart from looking at a page and saying its Major activity.

Read a few Astronomy books, thats Research.

actually i did do some research on this subject, as i have been watching the sun closely for a while, the title was more giving, then what is actually going on, there isnt MAJOR activity on the sun per-say but its more active then it has been in a long time

Fair play to you, glad your coming out to re quote what you have said.

I really dont mean to be picky here but when you watch the Sun for a while its "observations".
Understanding how the Sun works and what a sunpot will do as it heads to the equatorial regions is research, reading and undrstanding the physics of the workings of the sun.

Get me?
Observations and research!

hope it helps really I do.

lol, ha I see you have changed your title of thread from major to Heightened.
good on ya.

I hate to say it, but there are parts of it that I would actually relish.

TextGEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH: Over the past few days, active sunspot 1045 has hurled a series of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) toward Earth. These are not the kind of major CMEs that will spark auroras over, say, Florida, but they could spark some very nice lights around the Arctic Circle

3 groups of sunspots now, to soon to say but maybe the sun is now waking up.
