Thanks for your response.

I appreciate getting all these perspectives, really fills in my own blind spots as it is.
I am trapped in my body, with my own experience to go on, so some of this is a new
take for me, but still just as valid as my own thoughts I believe.

I see your point-

cut and dry, but there is truth to it!

Eye of the beholder - deflection - Both? !

We first need to agree on what "racism" actually is, and I say this because I often see many people (online and offline) that use the word out of context.

Well it seems you have ample desire to grow which trumps an ample mouth in my book.

I started this thread to expand my brain further, so far it only goes to show we could all
use more communication, we have more in common than we know.

What is it the proper or improper context to you???

I agree with Empire . . . defining terms is very important.

No offense to anyone in this thread, but i doubt most of you even know what racism is.

But i'm not insulting your intelligence, because more than 90% of the people i meet have no idea what racism is.

It's mostly because the words meaning has been diluted due to constant misuse.

Racism is believing that one subspecies of humans is inferior or superior to another.

Cut and dry, that is what racism is.

Most of the time when people call something "racist" the word they are really looking for is "racial prejudice".

For example, although this GIF image is attempting to be ironic, nothing in the gif is racist at all.

It's racial prejudice to say someone who is black likes watermelon, playing basketball and KFC. etc.

It is NOT racist.

You can have prejudice and not be a racist.

But this does not mean the person who made this gif is not a racist.

Because you can have prejudice AND be a racist.

I understand...

Is there a point in which getting so technical is used as a tool to mask racism?
I ask because I think some do use the technicalities of definition as a front to justify expressions of racism as merely a work of prejudice.

I mean can a lynching be racist in nature without knowing the motive of the individuals involved?

OR

do you need to see inside a persons soul to make such a determination?

I almost feel one would have to in order reach the threshold you apply - although I might be missing a key component

if you would care to expand I would love to hear it

Understanding the English language makes things clearer. It doesn’t mask anything.

I think the larger problem here is people not understanding what racism is . . .

An action is not racist unless the person committing the act believes one race is inferior or superior to another.

Not sure what you are talking about . . . threshold???

Here are some quick examples.

“I killed her because she was Asian.”
That is racial hate. (Hate Crime)

“You’re from the Middle-East, how would you create an IED?”
That is racial prejudice.

“Black people are inferior, so you can sit in the back of the bus.”
THAT IS RACISM.

It sounds like racism cannot be determined by an observer without supporting information provided by the alleged racists internal thought process or a direct admission ...

So do me a favor, answer this question below

Can YOU determine if a lynching was racist in nature without knowing the motive of the individual/s involved with the lynching?

This will help me understand, thanks

Maybe . . .

Show me a lynching, i'll tell you if i can deduce if it was done by racists.

If the victim had a swastika etched in his forehead by a knife or something like that, you could probably be near certain the people who committed the act were racists.

But then again, an intelligent murderer might do something like that as misdirection.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner! JPhish, you are correct. Hence the reason I linked my own thread to here, not for stars and flags, but for an understanding of what 'racist' actually means and how it has become a nothing word because of the misuse.
