Protest against Greek police action held in German city

www.earthtimes.org

Some 800 people in the north German port city of Hamburg demonstrated Saturday in support of students in Greece involved in recent clashes with police. Hamburg police broke up the protest after bottles and fireworks were thrown at officers as the demonstrators attempted to march from the University of Hamburg to the city's main railway station.

Afterwards, some of the protesters gathered outside the Greek consulate-general for an evening vigil. Police, backed by water cannons, were out in force near the building.

More than 100 people have been injured and about 400 have been detained during two weeks of protests in Greece triggered by the police shooting death of a teenager. Hundreds of shops and banks have been firebombed, vandalized and looted.

Finally some English media coverage.
So there you have it. There ARE protests in Germany, for all those unable to do a search or translate German to English.

In any event, the coming week looks like it will be full of more protests. I will keep those interested, updated.

Police Squash Violent Hamburg Protest

Scores of German riot police confronted an estimated 950 protesters in Hamburg over the weekend who were expressing their sympathy for student protesters in Greece by marching under the banner of "Solidarity is a weapon."

Police reported that the protest actions -- which allegedly included numerous members of the far-left anarchist scene -- were broken up on Saturday after they escalated to rioting, with special police units and journalists being pelted with bottles, iron rods and fireworks. Four police officers were reported injured.
