Adding to the tensions, Russia's state natural gas monopoly, Gazprom, warned on Thursday it will cut gas supplies to Ukraine on Jan. 1 if it fails to pay off a $2 billion gas debt.

In 2004, several hundred thousand demonstrators jammed the center of Kiev to demand fair elections in the Orange Revolution protests. Now, experts are predicting massive protests over the financial distress.

and so it spreads...

Ukrainian economic crisis began before the current US and Global economic crisis. It is largely unrelated to the global stock market meltdown and the securities/mortgages/debt-derived issued. Don't confuse it with what is going on in the US.

The Ukrainian crisis began back in 2007, and worsened through 2008. It is due to inefficiency of Ukraine's energy and manufacturing infrastructure, and government's incompetency in solving the matter. Ukraine was already deep in recessionary crisis as early as March, and by August it has gotten much worse - whereas the financial crisis in US hit in September. Protests on this matter in Ukraine started back in May - this is nothing new.

They are following in the footsteps of the Icelanders and Greeks
www.abovetopsecret.com...

Why would it have anything to do with the US?

Again - this has nothing to do with the crisis in Iceland - they are unrelated. And the problems in Ukraine started long before those in Iceland and Greece, so they are not following in anyone's footsteps. The Western world, even Europeans is largely unaware of what is going on in Ukraine. There have been protests there for nearly half a year already. This is nothing new.

and Greeks.

And what does this have to do with Greece? Greece is a completely different matter, arising from some altercation between civilians and police. How could Ukrainians be following in the footsteps of Greece, if Ukrainian protests started in May while Greek protests started in December? There is no connection in this case.

Hey Maloy why did you jump the gun and assume the thread was headed to something to do with the issue of the Global economic meltdown?

The OP said nothing connecting the two!

His second post was an example of what else is happening. not connected to.

I didn't assume anything, I just provided some background to let people know that the issue in Ukraine is not new, and that it has actually been going on for a year now. In fact even larger protests have been held in Kiev in recent months - but the news rarely reaches Western media. I am pretty sure that many people who read "economic meltdown" will automatically tie it to the global financial crisis. So my post was to clear up some inevitable confusion.

Many people know about US, Iceland, Greece, but few heard of the economic crisis that has been plaguing Ukraine for a year now.
