Obama's America looks a lot like Canada

www.nationalpost.com

This U.S. election represents a major inflection point for that country as well as for Canada and the world.

Obama will crush Hillary and then McCain in the fall, a new comprehensive poll shows.

Why? Because America is not working like it used to and has deteriorated in the past generation into more have-nots than haves. This is not news, but now the have-nots, and other disenchanted voters, are turning out in record numbers to vote.

I noticed this article and I got to admit that it made me think we might be better for america to try and become more like our northern neigbors than constantly trying to be more like our southern neigbors.

I agree. Most of the US is significantly more conservative than our neighbors to the north. Canadian or European-style politics might sell in the Northeast or West Coast, but you'll have to drag the rest of the country kicking and screaming in that direction.

If he runs on that kind of platform, Obama has no chance in the fall.

Becoming more like Canada is not a bad thing in my book.
Canada's mostly a pretty cool place.

A modern, hi-tech country with both strong markets and a limited welfare state, sensible environmental policies, good foreign relations, clean streets, low crime rates, good beer...

Where's the problem again?

Obama I think has a better chnce than most give him creadit for, and Bush made that possible. Before Bush and the republican majority it would of never happened. He's done so much wrong people want things to change and McCain is just a Bush follower so democrats will have it. Hillary just shows corruption with every thing the Clintons do so who's left Obama and Nader.

Canada does indeed seem like a pretty cool place...to visit I just don't want to live there. Too many of their policies that I disagree with.

Unfortunately, I think the US is rapidly heading toward one of two possible outcomes. Either the federal government is going to have to give the states more autonomy, allowing conservative states to be conservative and liberal states to be liberal, or we're going to have a redux of the early 1860s. This is really becoming a nation with two distinctly different cultures and the one-size-fits-all approach in DC is failing BOTH sides.

Let me guess your French Canadian. The French showed. You came on here with a one liner snooty comment then tell someone not to be defensive. Nothing against the French but there just that way about Americans I guess.

Haven't been to Canada but never really heard anything bad about them. Except that the cost of things are higher cause they don't pay taxes. I've known a few and seemed like good guys for the most part.

Oh, I definitely believe he has a chance, but its because he's going to run to the right quite a bit once he beats Hillary, attempting to position himself as a moderate once the general election starts. If he does that (and I think he will), I think he has a better than 50-50 chance of winning.

If he runs to the left or is effectively branded as a liberal, he's toast.

If he's politically smart, he'll wait to make his hard left turn after he's elected.

I Don't think he's going to start changing, because not changing is what works so good for him. He starts saying one thing and changes next week to another might as well pick Hillary or McCain.

This is both meaningfull and highly informative. Thankyou for telling about your Canadian friend. Would you like to hear about my friend from America? Hes real nice.

....We dont pay taxes. Since when.... Ive been getting ripped off for years then.

Do you even know what Canada is about? Do you understand your own topic?

We pay plenty of taxes.

Edit: Oh, and you have no right to make fun of the French Canadian. How can you stereo type a post like that? Weak Move.

That goes against the very principles that made this country great! Why should I be responsible for paying for someone, who doesn't want to get off they're lazy ass to work. I shouldn't be responsible for paying for their bills.

Furthermore, The rich shouldn't be held responsible for having to pay higher taxes while the poor get off scotch free. That does two things, that punishes the rich for making more money, and it creates a welfare state, which over time will grow, and consume the very democracy we have defended so vehemently for the past 200 years.

Welcome to the socialist state.

I think Obama is going to best Hillary as the nominee for the dems. I also believe that, if elected president (which I hope that he won't) he will immediately begin to implement his own pogrom....just like the rest of his predecessors. The professional political agenda is NOT the average American's agenda.

Just a little tid-bit of what to be looking for when/if Obama gets the democratic nomination. I forsee certain video recordings being released into public domain; showing him to be uncouth and verbally abusive to certain producers of an entertainment show (make this house nicer, please!).

I hope they get released 'cause they show him as a pompous, assuming arse with a bad temper and a foul mouth.

edited for runon sentences!

One of the things that I find most disturbing about Obama is that he completely disregards the principles the United States was founded upon: You have the right to pursue life, liberty and happiness. You don’t have a guarantee of achieving them. In America, you have the right to succeed and the right to fail. The government is not supposed to interfere with either outcome. He seems to want to change that fundamental principle of our system. If he does, what does that make the U.S,? Another province of Canada?

Welcome to the socialist state.

I hate to tell you, but by that definition we've been living in a socialist state since Roosevelt - Teddy, not Franklin D.

If you count education, we've been a socialist state since the beginning.

Canada is hardly North Korea.

Canada - much like the US and every single other modern industrialized country a country that features a capitalist market economy with limited socialization of essentials - food, shelter, education.

Furthermore basic infrastructure investments like roads, bridges, as well as services like law enforcement and firefighting can also be regarded as "socialization".

That is a weak argument. I should not be responsible for the "have nots".

As for the infrastructure, how the hell else do you expect it to get done? We all use roads, brides, law enforcement. That is not socialism. That is citizens paying for personal services

Err... he's a liberal Democrat, not a Maoist

The welfare state, a feature of every modern capitalist economy, ensures that you don't starve - it doesn't guarantee wealth by any means.

Wealth only comes along by some combination of hard work, skill, and good luck.
