Burning chilli sparks terror fear

Firefighters wearing protective breathing apparatus were called to D'Arblay Street, Soho, after reports of noxious smoke filling the air.

Police closed off three roads and evacuated homes following the alert.

Specialist crews broke down the door to the Thai Cottage restaurant at 1900 BST on Monday where they discovered the source - a 9lb pot of chillies.

In my book, 9lbs of chilli is a biological weapon of terror. Just thinking about it scares the hell out of me.

Now that sure is a nice spicy dip:

The spicy dip, which is a speciality at the restaurant, is made from charred chillies, garlic flakes, dried shrimps, palm sugar, shrimp paste, tamarind and vegetable oil.

Too bad, that it is also a terror alert in other cooking books.

I just have one question:

WHAT WERE THE EMERGENCY SERVICES THINKING?

Oh no!

We are under a chemical attack!

Run!

Flee!

Hide!

Just one more example, how to create paranoia out of nothing.

But I also remember a similar story, when a friend of mine was also making a chilli-dish and the second the threw those hot-spicy-thingies on hot oil and it started to smoke, it felt like somebody just dropped tear-gas into the kitchen and in few seconds everybody was "crying" from and choking a little. And the chef said, that right now, that he touched those chillies, he must NOT touch his eyes or his genital area for about a week. So - yeah, chillies can be mistaken for chemical agents.

It has something to do with living in a Fear Society, sad really we were once considered the home of the brave.

I think Ben Franklin was right we should have used the Turkey as our national bird.

I have a EMT[emergency medical tech] friend, that received a call from a woman that claimed to have drank bleach and ammonia , is this mustard gas?, any way the cops showed up and the fire department, they all had to wear protective suits, it was all really serious until they realized all she drank was Scope, yep all this trouble because she drank mouth wash, can't believe this didn't make the news and that they didn't evacuate half the city.

I wonder if the dip is any good?

Been there, done that!! ( the eyes part, that is! )

That was long ago, and a lesson well learned!

A Pepper Spray of Mass Destruction! It could be worse than tear gas......some times just cutting one pepper will take my breath.......hope that dip comes with a warning!!

It is such a familiar smell to me, living in the chile capital of the world. I can see how it would smell deadly to a northerner.

We make those exact things in practically every restaurant or house in Malaysia! It's called sambal belacan (Sum-BHAL buh-LA-chaan)

And I can certainly understand the panic; when that thing is frying (while it's being made) it really is quite a potent, strange smell and will hurt your eyes and make you sneeze uncontrollably. I personally gotta rush out for fresh air if someone in the house is making it.

So good that my dad refuses to go overseas without a personal stash. He says the chilli dips they have overseas lack a certain 'kick'. It's the regional (South East Asia) dip of choice for pretty much everything.
