Superbug forces Alberta hospital to shut

after the spread of a bacterial-resistant superbug and the discovery that some patients may have been exposed to HIV and hepatitis during surgeries performed with dirty tools.

after a recent audit found bits of flesh and blood left on tools and inside scopes used to examine patients and take tissue samples.

Those tools weren't properly scrubbed and brushed inside and out before being sterilized, and were then used on other patients, inspectors discovered.

I guess with 'free' healthcare, they have to cut coners somewhere......why not the cleaning..........

Please use this in the post creation window in future to cut down the length of your link, as long url's can alter the width of the page.
Or alternatively you can use: link name here

I admit that Im no fan of socialized medicine and there is ample evidence that such systems provide no better care than say the US system but in this example Im not sure you can point the blame finger at the system as a whole.

Hospitals are many things but this seems to be more of a local breakdown in sterile procedures in thier processing center than anything else. I agree HMO's et al. will cut corners, but in this case, the costs of treating hospital aquired infections and potential legal action etc, would overweigh any potential savings from not cleaning surgical equipment etc.

The superbug also seems to be a breakdown in basic universal percautions etc.

There is a link to each article on the website.

The main problem with the US healthcare system is the malpratice insurace doctors must carry. Unfortunatley the US is a lawyer happy society, where people will sue just about anyone, about anything.

Doctors who make grevious mistakes should be sued.......but there are too many times where minor errors happen and in which doctors get the 'pants' sued off them.
