there are no usable resources in Antarctica. well maybe fresh water if you melt the ice, but you'll need fuel to melt it.

no arable land. all food will have to be imported except maybe fish.

it's just not feasible to go outside most of the time. exploration teams are all young healthy volunteers.

shelter demand would be incredible as people would be living in them 90% of the time. all construction materials and fuel will have to be shipped in. electricity will have to be generated on site, again with imported fuel.

the world is nowhere near being so crowded we'd need to move there.

A place so inhospitable, yet oddly important enough to not allow eyes on the entirety of it. There's supposedly a place there called "Old Pole" where some shady stuff might have happened. Or it just rotted and they build a new one, closer inland. I believe it was Eric Hecker I got that info from - can't find a whole lot about all the interesting aspects of the continent, even the NSF doesn't freely offer much info up. Even the Antarctic Treaty page disappeared - though they just might have changed the address.

We should also consider the idea of 'zombie' viruses escaping when the ice melts

Apparently it's a desert. Every time you try and irrigate the crops, the water shatters.

But it is a Don grade suggestion!
