Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannonballs would come right off the monkey; Thus, it was quite literally, 'Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.'

Heard of this one long ago but not in such detail.

...Aramaic

Good grief.

Which parts of the Bible do you imagine were wrritten in Aramaic?

Out of 31,102 verses in the Bible, 268 were written in Aramaic.

This thread is a clownfest.

Or Hebrew or f_cking Koine. You kinda missed the point there, sport.

The relative thermal expansion difference between brass and iron would not be sufficient to cause the cannon balls to fall out of the indentations, also, it would be cheaper and easier to make the restraining grid out of wood, which could be nailed in place easily, too.

Brass monkey (colloquialism)

The term "dead nuts" is a machinist's term meaning with absolute accuracy. It comes from when you tighten the threaded nuts on set screws to lock in a position for machining, when the nuts are tightened to the degree they no longer turn and you are ready, the nuts will no longer turn, IE they are "dead nuts."
