The problems started because all countries thought that a successful revolution made by slaves resulting in the independence of a country with a
government full of ex-slaves was not a good idea.
Then France and other countries asked for compensation for the properties lost (including slaves, with France being the country that asked for the
bigger payment) because of the independence.
Then French and US banks started to increase pressure, and after the overthrown of the president the US banks asked the US Marines to take away the
gold reserves from the National Haiti Bank and took it the US.
After some more political unrest the US president decided to invade Haiti to "protect US interests", as usual, and the US took control of almost
everything, including the Haitian treasury and banks, taking around 40% of the country's income to pay US and French debts, while people were near
starvation. After 30 years of this situation they finally paid all the debts.
In 2003 the Haitian president demanded 21 billion US dollars from France, and, one year later, a coup d'état took him out. Request for UN troops were
denied by France, but right after the former president presented his resignation in suspicious conditions France voted for the sending of UN
troops.
From then the Haitian governments have had support from France and the US and talk about reparation payments disappeared.
Then they had the big earthquake that left, according to Red Cross, left one third of the population hurt or homeless.
