Iceland declares state of emergency over volcanic eruption threat

Powerful earthquakes rock country’s southwestern Reykjanes peninsula, increasing likelihood of event

Icelandic authorities have declared a state of emergency after a series of powerful earthquakes rocked the country’s southwestern Reykjanes peninsula, signalling the increased likelihood of a volcanic eruption in the region.

“The National police chief … declares a state of emergency for civil defence due to the intense earthquake (activity) at Sundhnjukagigar, north of Grindavik,” the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management said in a statement.

“Earthquakes can become larger than those that have occurred and this series of events could lead to an eruption,”

JUST IN - State of emergency declared in Grindavík, Iceland. Civil defense has decided to evacuate the town.

It goes from eruption swarm to instantaneous mass event over many kilometers.

Yes lots of quake swarms in Iceland but this one is truely massive.

Prayers for those being affected and hope they get out before it blows!


Edit to add, here is a video of some of it happening in Iceland. Truly disconcerting sounds. I went through a lot of earthquakes growing up in Alaska and non of them sounded like this. Twitter video link.

All kidding aside, must be quite terrifying and suspenseful. Anxiety galore! Keep them in your thoughts and prayers. They're easier to support seeing how they're not killing each other and jeopardizing the stability of the planet. It's not their fault, and you really can't be mad at mother nature unless you're a complete jackass, so...

Again, I hope their evacuation plans are solid and well rehearsed, if need be.

Truly horrifying! Those noises are unreal! Prayers that the people can get out of there and get to safety before all hell breaks loose.
