Although all US Native American tribes had been "reduced" to reservations by the 1880's, perhaps it wasn't entirely true.

There was Ishi, for example, in California (a last survivor of a genocide) who died in 1916.
And he was already regraded as a relic at the time.

But in the Sierra Madre mountains there were apparently still "Bronco-Apaches" in the 1920"s?

But the last remnants, perhaps 100 individuals, mostly women and children, continued to live free and raid in Northern Mexico, Southeastern Arizona, and Southwestern New Mexico well into the 1930’s.

southernarizonaguide.com...

My interest was piqued actually about a white child who was raised by the "bronco Apaches", and the last raid (allegedly in 1924) featured a warrior who had a long white beard.

Not sure how much is legend or "truth".

Any info and insights welcome.

Remember - if I ever wear a hoodie that says: "Go Apache-Broncos", I mean the tribe, not the team.

Joke - I'd probably mean both, the team and the tribe.

That depends on context.

they were also called the Tsokanende / Chiricahua

Nednhi, Nde’ndai or Ndendahe (also known as Ndéndai, Nde-nda-i, Nédnaa’í, Ndé’indaaí, Ndé’indaande, Ndaandénde – 'Enemy People', 'People who make trouble', the Mexicans adopted it as Bronco Apaches – ′Wild, Untamed Apaches′, lived in Sierra Madre Occidental and deserts of NW Chihuahua, NO Sonora and SE Arizona, therefore often called Sierre Madre Apaches, Southern Chiricahua)[34]

Well Cochise brought his family to meet the army, because he thought they were at peace.

And suddenly the army was: "produce this white child, or you'll all die".

Cochise tried to reason, "that wasn't our tribe, we'll help you find him".

Cochise cut his way out of the US army tent and escaped.

His family - cousins and nephews however were hanged.

Nevertheless, history (and herstory) must be re-written.

Just theoretically thinking, not sure that's how it ever happened ...

So you've survived World War I.

Been in the trenches and chemicals, and the first "modernist" mechanized war.

At least secure in the belief that a modern world is now a more "league of nations" and secure world.

And you buy a cheap piece of land in the US semi-desert, with an eye on a pretty Senorita and hopefully kids.

And then - you get raided by Apaches of all things!

"Er, excuse me , but aren't you supposed to be in the previous century"?

Oh no, somebody left the door open after a night at the Museaum ...
We caught the Triceratops, but the Apaches galloped away.
