This is all to funny, many electric and plug in hybrid cars are having their registration suspended, and possibly cancelled.

As the owners are not providing kilometres travelled, for their road tax to be calculated and for them to pay.

This will cause issues as should the rego be cancelled and the driver hits a pedestrian, chances are the victim can’t claim accident compensation.

As here in Victoria the 3rd party accident cover for personal injury is included in your current registration.

Kind of a stupid policy, then the victim has to sue the driver. Good luck getting a cent.

And what difference is there with all the petrol / diesel engines out there? Sounds like a psyop to push more digital tracking.

Well, if you are going to have a charge by the mile road use tax then what you need is a transponder that can read the odometer reading and automatically send the results to the government. With AI why can't you photograph the odometer reading and put in any number you want?

My odometer shows 30,000 but the picture I sent in only shows 2000. Your problem not mine. Oh and remember to delete the EXIF data as well.

As for dealing with the fallout of motor vehicle accidents, sounds like some common sense has made it way through and everyone is covered for the physical body damage these days, at fault or not with the compulsory 3rd party insurance system.

That’s why they are introducing policies to stop the manufacturing of internal combustion cars snd trucks in the next 10 years.

It’s control.

It’s a great idea, though I could see this scenario happening.

Say you buy an electric car, the seller did dodgy the reporting of kilometres.

You get a roadworthy, then show up over the pits ti register the car.

VicRoads check the odometer and it displays 200 thousand kilometres, though the reported kilometres, are 20 thousand from the seller.

Now VicRoads identify you as the owner, and refuse to register the car until the road tax is paid.

Now you either pay or have to take civil action for your loss.

Who can be bothered dealing with the hassle.

Try telling it to this thread:

US Energy Secretary wants ALL military vehicles.....Electric....by.....2030

There is so much sitting in the Great Australian Blight, maybe not as much as Iraq, but not far off.

The current Lithium spec ain't up to task to replace oil, as for some of those electric drive chains, kick serious ass if you have the juice.

The day I see an electric drive beat a top fuller down the quarter mile, I know the motors can do it, but can the energy supply. It will probably be so lack luster event with some silent thing just glide away. The rattle of those machines is an experience.

Does the road tax apply to bicycles and motorcycles?

Motorcycle yes. Pushies, I doubt it as they don’t get registered (AFAIK) Most likely the untwisting of all those Lycra knickers would break the state.

There are no gasoline taxes for EV. Gasoline is heavy taxed. So they made a law that taxes electric and hybrids per km on top of the normal road tax, to make up for that loss in gasoline / diesel taxes.

Drive it into a lake or ocean and take the insurance payout. If and when it's recovered getting a mileage out of it is going to be the last thing a scrapyard is going to think about.
