Former Pope Benedict XVI, the first to resign in centuries, has died aged 95.

The health of the Pope Emeritus, as Benedict was called after he stepped down, had undergone a "worsening in the last hours" due to his age, the Vatican said.

Doctors had been constantly monitoring his condition.

A statement read: "With sorrow I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican.

RIP Benedict XVI.

I feel strangely frightened.

I know the world has its share of fixations, and the institution itself, the Catholic church, has many grievous sins to account for (if not to atone for) ... but this time of passing marks something almost undefinably frightening to me.

Is that weird?

[I'm hoping that people can avoid the populist "litany of cruelty" with which usually accompanies any news regarding the human baggage that afflicts this church... please.]

At least he knew how to act like a pope. The current pope is a joke.

Im not sure if it's weird Maxmars, you just call it how you feel it i suppose.

As to the timing, well his was up or so it seems.

It's us that attribute value to the day happening to be New Year's Eve.

Plenty of other places around the globe that celebrate New Year at other times.

Why do you say that?
How is a pope supposed to act?

While an answer coming from me might not be what you wanted, I'll risk it since Creep Thumper, appears to not be logged in.

In my opinion, Benedict's papacy was not (by choice or otherwise) "pumped" by an intense public relations campaign, like his "successor." Further, he will be fondly remembered for his approach to a conservative principle regarding the actual "nature" of the church within a social context.

I don't know, nor even did he I suppose, what would have happened had he not retired; but now with his passing, I am feeling the closure of an era... and had the world truly been what I was taught it was, I really shouldn't be feeling that way.

Oh, and by the way... I don't attribute any special significance to what the date is... that's for prophets and mystics to debate... I am neither.

He's a politician, not a cleric.

Too late to edit my post. I should say that Francis acts the politician instead of the cleric. He is supposed to be a man of the cloth, but he opens his big, ugly mouth and spews politics.

"Former Pope Benedict XVI Dies Aged 95 Days After Francis Called For Prayers For His Predecessor"

Because of the prayers?

When i heard that one pope asked for prayers for the other pope my first thought was:

Shouldn´t he have the best connections to his boss "up there". Or did he have so much dirt on him (he covered child molesters inside of the catholic church) that they were afraid that his elevator maybe would go down instead of up? Why does a pope need prayers?

And as we all see, if people prayed for him, it didn´t help (unless they prayed for his death). He had to go the way every other earthling has to go sooner or later.

Well, who would have thought that?

"Happy" New Year (we all know that it will be worse than 22...) to all of you from Germany!
Cheers

A.) He was 95.

B.) He stepped down from the Papcy almost a decade ago due to health concerns.

Anyone that tries to make anything more out of his death is an idiot.

Francis is probably the most Christ-like and least political Pope we've had in a long time, if not ever.

You made me laugh. Congratulations. I don't laugh.

Your politics precede you.

That could be a sign that something will change in the system of Christianism and its deceptions.
