The poorest country in the Western hemisphere is in the grips of an inflationary vise that is squeezing its citizenry and exacerbating protests that have brought society to the breaking point. Violence is raging and making parents afraid to send their kids to school; fuel and clean water are scarce; hospitals, banks and grocery stores are struggling to stay open.
The lack of fuel recently forced hospitals to cut back critical services and prompted water delivery companies to shut down. Banks and grocery stores also are struggling to stay open because of dwindling fuel supplies — and exorbitant prices — that make it nearly impossible for many workers to commute.

horrible. so glad I don't live there.

apparently there is no government structure. President is little more than Mayor of Port-au-Prince with gangs controlling the countryside.

why are we giving all this $ to the UN? where are they? where is the OAS?
is anyone going to help these poor people?

It's meant to be that way. Just like the gangs in the USA own the neighborhoods in areas.

Haiti is one of those countries with short periods of stability, and long periods of dysfunction and barbarity. Some people just cannot govern, or be governed.

After the earthquake in Haiti didn’t Bill Clinton and GHW Bush “help them out”.

There is no fixing Haiti it’s meant to be in constant dysfunction. My bet is it’s a big hub for human and child trafficking.

To be fair, Haiti has had some seriously awful luck with earthquakes and hurricanes and the like. However, there's still something more going on there. Take the Dominican Republic, for instance. They are the other country on the same island (Hispaniola) as Haiti, yet they have had the same natural disasters and aren't in the same crap-pile situation as Haiti.

Maybe the US should invade again and rob them again. And use the same excuse as last time where if they didn't someone else would have.

Good ol mob tactics. Rob them and then tell them they need the military's protection.

Well, except they don't have anything to steal anymore really.

I mean we gotta do something.. right?

Biden can use the excuse to make it Cold War 2.0 and say if the US military doesn't invade and occupy them then Russia will. It doesn't even have to be true. It's just scary enough that people will support it.

Maybe the US can send billions to Haiti in restitution to send them to Africa. /sarc

Haiti has a long history of other nations trying to "help" them out.

Their government is corrupt and self-sabotaging and has further aid in self-destruction with multiple intelligence agencies constantly screwing them over.

The people living there have the unfortunate fate of living in a place that every other country would love to have a military base on. The people that live there were screwed from the very beginning as soon as their ancestors got off the slave ships.

Dominicans don't like Haitians. Dominicans have many of the same issues as Haiti the only difference is that the D.R. has a better relationship with the US.

The US government would love to have control over Cuba, DR, and Haiti. They've already got Puerto Rico. Haitians just really don't like having outside help. Especially not from the US since some time back the Marines robbed a bunch of gold out of their bank and then turned around and said they should accept having the "help" of the US military. Which really just meant roll over and let the US military and government take over.

When it comes to erasing cultures and histories the US is no stranger than other major power players throughout history.

If the Haitian government wasn't so unstable it really wouldn't surprise me if they accepted another nation's sovereignty just to give a big fat middle finger to the US.

Haitians are currently facing a series of overlapping crises that are becoming deadlier by the day as heavily armed gangs continue to blockade the country’s principal port and fuel terminal.

The country is also experiencing its worst hunger in history as a deadly outbreak of cholera spreads and armed gangs increasingly targeting women and children with sexual violence as a form of warfare.

“In 20 years of working in Haiti, we have never seen something like this,” said Fiammetta Cappellini, country representative for the Avsi Foundation. “Violence is everywhere and touches everybody. The most vulnerable people are literally struggling to survive as humanitarian aid is failing to reach people.”

Gangs dominating nearly 60% of Haiti's capital are tearing society apart, as almost 20,000 people in Port-au-Prince face "catastrophic famine-like conditions", a senior United Nations official has warned.

Neighboring country Dominican Republic calls for international intervention

www.ft.com...

The president of the Dominican Republic has called on the international community to intervene in Haiti without delay to halt gang violence, instead of making speeches about helping the stricken Caribbean nation.

“The international community needs to be more responsible,” President Luis Abinader told the Financial Times in an interview. “If it’s really concerned about Haiti, it needs to go and help there. It has to help Haiti against the gangs who are raping boys and girls every day, who are killing innocent people every day.”

I think that International Intervention is anathema to most Caribbean countries fearing US imperialism, but the DR knows that Haiti can't fix itself. and it doesn't want to be overrun by fleeing Haitians.

pray for Haiti

That's exactly what it is. The Haitians have been quite open about accusing the US agencies of kidnapping children, but the media around here never mentions it.
