The immortality of the soul is a core fundamental belief in all religions around the world, except for one that I can think of. Religions may play around with the concept, but they all have it in one form or another. Even secret societies and the mystery religions teach the inherent immortality of the soul.

The Catholic Church teaches the inherent immortality of the soul, eastern religions teach the soul is immortal and reincarnated.

But exactly what is immortality? Simply put, it is the impossibility of ever dying. It is a state of being where one can live off oneself forever never needing an outside force to sustain them.

The Bible teaches a very different understanding of immortality than the religions of the world, even those of the Churches of Christendom that claim to worship the God of the Bible. It is my belief that when one really understands what immortality entails, and who has it their eyes have to be opened to who has the truth and who are in the darkness mentally.

Although the Churches of Christendom teach that the soul is immortal, and they also teach that everyone goes to either heaven, or a Hellfire to burn forever, or a purgatory after death, the Bible paints a very different picture of death and immortality.

For example the Bible teaches that God alone possessed immortality until Jesus Christ was resurrected and as a reward for his faithfulness and loyalty unto death he was given immortality:

"He is the King of those who rule as kings and Lord of those who rule as lords, the one alone having immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see."-1 Timothy 6:15-16.

So while the religions of Christendom, and indeed all religions around the world, along with secret societies and mystery religions, teach that humans possess an immortal soul that can never die, the Bible clearly teaches that God, and his son Jesus Christ are the ones alone that possess immortality. Now if you notice we are also taught that Jesus Christ now dwells in unapproachable light, and no human has ever seen it and will never be able to see it, that is, the elevated form of life that Jesus now possesses in heaven. This is important, because it does relate to the quality of life that those who possess immortality possess. That is they are spirit beings, they cannot be flesh and blood.

The Bible alone teaches that the soul that sins it itself will die:

"The soul who sins is the one who will die."-Ezekiel 18:20.

Death was the the consequence given to Adam and Eve for sinning:

"Jehovah God also gave this command to the man: “From every tree of the garden you may eat to satisfaction. But as for the tree of the knowledge of good and bad, you must not eat from it, for in the day you eat from it you will certainly die.”-Genesis 2:16-17.

What is a soul and what is death? A soul, according to the Bible, is a life form that possess the breath of life and has flesh. It teaches us that we are souls as human beings, and the animals as well. Not that we possess some mystic thing that is a soul, we don't HAVE a soul, we ARE souls. That is we are living beings with flesh, and we breath air:

"And Jehovah God proceeded to form the man out of dust from the ground and to blow into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man came to be a living soul."-Genesis 2:7.

Notice that the Bible does not say that the man possessed a soul. It says that God blew the breath of life into his nostrils and the man came to be a living soul, or as the revised NWT translates the Hebrew word Nepesh:

"The man became a living person."

The Bible calls all animals that have flesh and need air to live souls as well. In fact it tells us that there is no distinction between animals souls, and human souls, because we all have the same eventuality or outcome, that is death:

"For there is an eventuality as respects the sons of mankind and an eventuality as respects the beast, and they have the same eventuality. As the one dies, so the other dies; and they all have but one spirit, so that there is no superiority of the man over the beast, for everything is vanity. All are going to one place."-Ecclesiastes 3:19.

That the Bible teaches that animals are souls there is no doubt. Look no further than the very first chapter of the first book:

"And God went on to say: “Let the waters swarm forth a swarm of living souls and let flying creatures fly over the earth upon the face of the expanse of the heavens.” And God proceeded to create the great sea monsters and every living soul that moves about, which the waters swarmed forth according to their kinds, and every winged flying creature according to its kind. And God got to see that [it was] good."-Genesis 1:20-21.

The word here translated soul is nepesh, and it can rightly be translated, life. As a soul is a life that needs air to live and has flesh.

Jehovah God is not a soul. He is a spirit. He is not flesh and blood:

"God is a Spirit."-John 4:24.

"Now Jehovah is the Spirit."-2 Corinthians 3:17.

A spirit is a form of life higher than a soul, or a life-form that possesses flesh and blood. It is invisible to our eyes, it does not need air, and it is not confined to the physical realm where we reside:

"Now to the King of eternity, incorruptible, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever."-1 Timothy 1:17.

Jehovah God is the King of eternity. He has always existed, and will always exist. He cannot die:

"Are you not from everlasting, O Jehovah? O my God, my Holy One, you do not die."-Habakkuk 1:12.

Jehovah is an invisible spirit being that possesses immortality, that is deathlessness, he can never die, he lives on forever. He needs nothing to sustain his life. He is the source of all energy. And he is beyond imagining in brilliance and light. We are told that no human can look upon the face of God and live. Jehovah himself told Moses this when Moses asked Him to look upon Jehovah's face:

"But he added: “You cannot see my face, for no man can see me and live.”-Exodus 33:20.

So the Bible clearly teaches that physical lifeforms, that life on earth, that has flesh and needs air to survive, are souls. It teaches us that human souls lost the right to life when our first human father and mother, Adam and Eve sinned. That the consequence of that sin was death. Death is the returning to the dust and ceasing to be alive. Like the flame of a candle that is snuffed out. Before the candle was lit there was no flame, and after the flame of the candle wick is snuffed out it ceases to be.

Immortality. Jehovah alone possessed immortality, that is the impossibility of ever dying. But he gave it to his son AFTER his son died for our sins. Jesus Christ was risen a spirit being, and given a body of divine nature like that of Jehovah God, his Father.

There are different forms and superiority of life. The highest plane of existence is that of the divine plane where God alone used to reside. Below the divine plane God created other spirit creatures like himself, But they are not immortal. Notice that God is not a creature, this is a teaching of the Mormons. God is a spirit. Not a created being, which a creature is. Jesus is a spirit creature. He is not, as the Churches of Christendom teach, God. As God cannot die, and Jesus died for our sins. No human can see God and live. After Jesus returned to heaven, John the beloved apostle told us very clearly that no human had ever seen God (he looked upon the face of Jesus Christ all the time while Jesus was alive and on earth during his kingdom preaching of 3 1/2 years):

" No man has seen God at any time; the only-begotten god who is at the Father’s side is the one who has explained Him."-John 1:18.

Below the angels there is the human plane of existence. Below humans is the animal plane. Below the animals is the plant plane. And so on.

Immortality is a reward to the faithful chosen anointed Christian congregation. It is not something that all souls possess.

Scripture reveals to us that those called and chosen to live in heavenly life will die as humans, and will be rewarded with immortal spirit bodies, being resurrected in the divine nature of Jehovah God, and his son Jesus Christ. Thus they will be elevated above the spirit plane of existence above the angels in heaven, as to the quality of life they possess.

Flesh and blood, that is the mortal, physical soul cannot go to heaven:

"Flesh and blood cannot inherit God’s Kingdom."-1 Corinthians 15:50.

That same scripture tells the anointed Christian congregation that they will be raised to heavenly spirit life and given immortality:

"Look! I tell you a sacred secret: We will not all fall asleep in death, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the blink of an eye, during the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised up incorruptible, and we will be changed. For this which is corruptible must put on incorruption, and this which is mortal must put on immortality."-1 Corinthians 15:51-53.

If the soul was already immortal it would not be granted the reward of immortality.

Remember when we read that Jesus Christ is the one alone having immortality that resides in unapproachable light? Well, at the time of the fulfillment of this scripture, the 144,000 co-rulers of Christ, his adopted brothers, and sons of God, will also be given immortality. And the Bible tells us that they will reside forever and ever with Jehovah God and his son Jesus Christ. And that they will no more have night. And they will not need the sun to shine to give them day. Because in the presence of God there will always be day, and God himself will be their sun:

"They [that is the 144,000 who will rule in heaven with Christ, those who are given immorality] will see his face [will see the face of Jehovah God as he is, for then they will be just like him], and his name will be on their foreheads.  Also, night will be no more, and they have no need of lamplight or sunlight, for Jehovah God will shed light upon them, and they will rule as kings forever and ever."-Revelation 22:4-5.

All the religions around the world, except for the true Christian congregation teaches the very first lie of Satan the Devil, that you do not die. These the Bible says, everyone everywhere are being mislead by the lies of Satan the Devil:

"So down the great dragon was hurled, the original serpent, the one called Devil and Satan, who is misleading the entire inhabited earth; he was hurled down to the earth, and his angels were hurled down with him."-Revelation 12:9.

This one very simple teaching of immortality clearly defines who has the truth and who is being mislead by Satan the Devil.

The Bible paints a very different picture of what a soul is, and who has immortality than what religions, even the Churches of Christendom teach.

When comparing their teaches to the Bible, what it says on this one topic alone, it becomes very apparent who teaches the truth, and practices the true religion in honor to Jehovah the true and Almighty God.

It doesn’t take long reading the Old Testament to see what a spiteful, hateful, jealous god (lower case is deliberate) Jehovah is. He created this realm to enslave / trap us all. What kind of supreme being needs his name to be vindicated, sanctified and glorified so much. Jehovah is nothing but a lowly Demi god.

When Moses spoke to Jehovah, God revealed a part of his nature to him when he said:

"Then Jehovah came down in the cloud and stationed himself with him there and declared the name of Jehovah.  Jehovah was passing before him and declaring: “Jehovah, Jehovah, a God merciful and compassionate, slow to anger and abundant in loyal love and truth, showing loyal love to thousands, pardoning error and transgression and sin."-Exodus 34:5-7.

God is love. And some of his superlative qualities are that of great mercy and compassion. He is a God very slow to anger, and pardons the transgressions of sinners.

In fact Jehovah inspired a psalmist to write that he remembers that we are dust, and has not even done to us what we deserve. As far off as the sunrise is from the sunset, so far off from us he has put off the sins of those who serve him:

"As far off as the sunrise is from the sunset,
So far off from us he has put our transgressions.
As a father shows mercy to his sons,
Jehovah has shown mercy to those who fear him.
For he well knows how we are formed,
Remembering that we are dust.
"
-Psalms 103:12-14.

Jesus was a jew so we need to think what soul is in judaism. Soul is a "i" and infinite. First soul was given to Adam, soul is passion, reason and intelligence. In judaism souls are given from the Guf. Souls are limited and messiah will not come until Guf is emptied of all its souls and when guf is empty first infant without a soul will die and it is the beginning of end of times.
So Jesus promise to those who believe in him an eternal life, he cannot promise eternal life to those who are born when Guf is empty. When Guf is empty it is the end of more humans as we are. Every soul is eternal till that .

Honestly, I can't think of anything more painful than immortality. Along the lines of The Twilight Zone Hell Casino where you always win.

While not a practicing Buddhist, I've adopted the 3 Universal Truths and jammed them into my hodge-podge worldview. Two of those are "Impermenance" and "No Self". Which boils down to; there is no divine self, and there is no everlasting experience. It's a phenomenal brief candle you either completely waste or live to the fullest.

That provides more peace to me than the immortal alternative. While I absolutely want to extend it to the fullest, I will feel lucky making 72 years. And I could still get hit by a truck and die tomorrow. Always a car crash away.

It's also a better time to be human than antiquity. Already up to double the brief candle it was prior to antiseptics.

And to finish this off all pretentious-like, I like my idiot tale that signifies nothing. And have no fear about it becoming how it was before I was born.

The soul is an integral part of our being. Without our I AM (exodus 3.14) we could never experience existence. Therefore our soul and God, are even closer to us than we (as in mind) are. Demystified in a wonderful quote by Meister Eckhart ...

“The eye through which I see God is the same eye through which God sees me; my eye and God's eye are one eye, one seeing, one knowing, one love.”

When the eye of the soul and eye of the mind are one (Matthew 6:22). Our local consciousness collapses into unification with the mind of God (I and the Father are one). The 144,000 petals of full consciousness.

I know many Christians who are not members of the JW faith who don’t believe non christians will have eternal life. Eternal life is found in Jesus, hell is eternal but human suffering is not eternal as many have come to believe.
I agree with your explanation and have for quite some time, none of my beliefs were or are based on the beliefs of the JW teachings but by what the bible teaches and studying with other christians
I disagree vehemently with JW doctrine in most positions but on this, some mutual ground
It was a good explanation in relation to eternal life

There is no eternity without a relationship with Jesus

Are you familiar with Gnosticism? What you're talking about is basically the gist of it, that the Old Testament God was a being named Yaldabaoth who was pretending to be God, and that he created the physical universe to trap souls in it and demand they worship him as the only God.

Yeah this is why I dont take Jehovas Witnesses view of "Christianity" seriously

There are very few religions that get the tenants of Christianity right, and some that do aren't even considered Christianity

the catholic church and so many other " variations" of such miss the mark by a mile

I am not well versed in Gnosticism. I spent the first 22 years of my life deeply engrained as a JW. Subsequently, I went on a hard mission to find the real ‘truth’ of this reality immediately after I left.

After 21 years of research, I can tell you that the OP is full of it, trying to peddle that we don’t have an immortal soul. Or dependency on believing in Jesus, or whatever the religion or reason to worship.

If the God the OP describes was as forgiving and slow to anger that is represented, then maybe it/he/she would give us a sum of lifetimes to figure it out. The OP is clearly describing JW propaganda — live in eternity on planet earth in the same body (being a JW) or absolute NOTHINGNESS.

Anyone that’s had children can see there are innate personalities right when they’re born. 💡

When Moses spoke to Jehovah

Interesting, you mention Moses and his dealings with Jehovah and Jehovah’s supposed ‘slow to anger’.

Please explain how an imperfect human (Moses), talked the Supreme Being out of slaughtering all of his offspring out of ‘anger’?

Exodus 32:11-14

But Moses begged the LORD his God, “ his God, “LORD, don’t let your anger destroy your people. You brought them out of Egypt with your great power and strength. But if you destroy your people, the Egyptians will say, ‘God planned to do bad things to his people. That is why he led them out of Egypt. He wanted to kill them in the mountains. He wanted to wipe them off the earth.’ So don’t be angry with your people. Please change your mind! Don’t destroy them. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel. These men served you, and you used your name to make a promise to them. You said, ‘I will make your people as many as the stars in the sky. I will give your people all this land as I promised. This land will be theirs forever.’” So the LORD felt sorry for the people. He did not do what he said he might do—he did not destroy them.

Appreciate your point of view. Certainly there is no eternal life without Jesus.

I wanted to reason something out with you here and for others reading as well. Many were raised in the belief that a Hellfire exists. My wife for the better part of her childhood believed in a Hellfire. Which is quite sad. You wrote something, and I want to open your mind to what the Bible reveals to what is going to happen to Hell, to help you see what it really is. You said “hell is eternal.” I am glad you wrote human suffering is not eternal. But is hell really eternal?

In Revelation 20:14 according to the King James Version it says: “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.”

So two things are thrown into the lake of fire in this verse: (1) Death, and (2) Hell.

Look at the following clip from The Return of the King, when Gollum falls into the lava at Mount Doom:

Did you notice what happened to Gollum? Let us say the ring represents death, and Gollum represents Hell. Did they continue to exist after they fell into the lava?

That scripture tells us that the lake of fire represents the “second death.” Just like lava completely destroys what is thrown into it, so the lake of fire completely does away with what is thrown into it. So when Hell is thrown into the lake of fire it is done away with forever. Hell will not always exist. It is not eternal.

What this means is that death and hell will be done away with. Look:

And the last enemy, death, is to be brought to nothing.”-1 Corinthians 15:26.

Notice that the last enemy to humankind, death, is to be brought to nothing. Thus Revelation depicts death being thrown into the lake of fire, this represents complete destruction. Death is to be brought to nothing. Hell in that scripture in Greek is Sheol, and it means the Grave.

In that future time when Jesus Christ brings to nothing all governments and powers, as the last enemy death is to be brought to nothing and hell is going to be done away with forever. Humankind will no longer have to face the inevitability of dying. They will be perfected and have the glorious freedom of the children of God. They will be granted perfection and eternal life, by the grace of God’s good will, through their exercising faith in the shed blood of Jesus’ ransom sacrifice.

This is an important truth! Death and hell will not always hound humankind. God has made a way to do away with these things. At that time Revelation tells us that there will be no more sorrow, or crying, or dying, for the former things, the things we now face, will be done away with:

”And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”-Revelation 21:4.

The reset of associated memory in relation to any particular soul apon each reincarnation in my opinion is death of that soul.

We say things like he/she is an old soul which suggests many reincarnations but there is no associated memories carried over so in reality what is the ACTUAL point of immortality because in order to live the so called desired life to obtain ascension and therefore exit then applying lessons learnt through memories is essential........without these memories the influence of manner raised and external triggers are majorically detrimental.

I think the soul was originally immortal but I think our punishment is eternal and that punishment is reincarnation with memorial reset........if we are present on this planet we have already been deemed insalvagable, destined to chase the idea of ascension but never able to achieve it.

Living hell.

I'm not sure how no one has figured out that our planet is a prison the Bible threatens Hell well lets take note of were we are and how we live .

1st of all we must crap and wipe our butt's everyday Thanks God for the Chili dogs

Now the Bible talks of Demons pain torture , We have to kill to survive and everywhere we walk there is danger Go into the jungles get eaten go into the woods and Bigfoot gets you step on a serpent and die get bit by a tiny spider and die , Go swimming and get your brain eaten by amoebas .

Think about it We are born with a Death Sentence which means we don't matter and some are only here to be prey , In my opinion we share our fate with every living creature on this planet from every corner of the universe those who are to be punished for their sins are sent directly to Earth .

I bet even the Queen had her own version of hell .

YHVH, an insignificant storm god and one of the many Levantine gods, who got lucky and managed to persuade men that he was the god of choice. I still cannot grasp how he is the god worshipped by Christianity. I worship no god and certainly not YHVW, who is probably long gone to wherever it is he came from.

"Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”
John 8:51

"And when this mortal hath put on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: Death is swallowed up in victory."
1 Corinthians 15:54

Why would we need to die? Was Christ's sacrifice not sufficient to atone for all sin forever?

"I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies, but everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?"
John 11:26

Most people are waiting for their resurrection, yet we can lay claim to our birthright while we still live. But who's willing to lay down the nets that ensnare them to follow Christ?
