Paradox Lost. It's a trippy kind of film. Indie, but worth a view. May seem a bit slow, but the ending is epic.

Also Morbius I found entertaining for a DC flick..

Next Thanksgiving, that is IF there IS an next Thanksgiving, look around for a little movie called ''Pieces of April''. A little Thanksgiving move about a family and it's mental illnesses and generation gaps. The daughter and her guy are hosting her family for the first time in their small apartment. Funny, sad, poignant, and the best Thanksgiving flick there is.

Holy Mackerel Batman. That last trailer slid into this trailer.
I just read a clip about this yesterday. Apparently this movie just blew the roof off the house at Cannes a day or so ago.
Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba, what could go wrong.

She is a librarian, he is a genie.....

As long as all the actors in the movie were willing partcipants that gave explicit permission to use their image, signed contracts and release forms acknowledging so and were happy to be a part of said movie, I'm okay with that.

If you like warmovies that focus on strategy and tactics, Gettysburg (1993). There's nothing like it in terms of the focus on strategy and tactics (as far as I know). Other Civil War movies that are quite good are Glory and Andersonville, but those are a little different.

If you want to cry and get all emotional (and see something beautiful that isn't as violent and dark as most modern movies): Inside Out (animation; but it works quite well for adults).

Lesser known but still quite good Sci-Fi:

Wing Commander 1999
The Fifth Element 1997
Starship Troopers 1997

Tier 2 Sci-Fi:

Judge Dredd 1995
Contact 1997
Event Horizon (1997) (also horror)
Galaxy Quest (1999) (also a comedy)
Serenity (2005) (the movie that follows the Firefly tv show, but I watched it before watching the show and didn't find it difficult to follow, likewise there are some Stargate movies that follow the Stargate SG-1 show, but for those you do need to watch the show first and get to know the characters)
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005) (also a comedy)

A bit more recent (in chronological order, tier 1):

Elysium 2013
Edge of Tomorrow 2014 (already mentioned but whatever)
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets 2017
Ready Player One 2018
Monster Hunter 2020

Tier 3 Sci-Fi:

Total Recall (1990)
Demolition Man (1993)
Screamers (1995)
Escape from New York 1981 ; Escape from L.A. (1996)
Escape from Absolom / No Escape 1994
Waterworld 1995
The Postman 1997
Lost In Space 1998
Soldier 1998
Sphere (1998)
Minority Report 2002
Equilibrium (2002)
I, Robot 2004
The Island 2005
Pandorum (2009)
District 9 (2009)
Pixels 2015 (also comedy)
The Tomorrow War 2021
Free Guy 2021 (also comedy)
Cube 1997 (there are sequels but they're not so good, I did like some aspects of the last one)

Fantasy (not doing the famous ones like LOTR):

Reign of Fire (2002) with Christian Bale
Neverending Story

Western:

Young Guns 1 and 2
Tombstone 1993
3:10 to Yuma 2007
True Grit 2010
The Hateful Eight 2015

Drama:

Murder in the First 1995 (with Kevin Bacon and Christian Slater, based on a true story about someone who was done great injustice at Alcatraz prison, and his murder court case)

Another movie about injustice like that concerning someone falsely imprisoned at Guantanomo Bay, one of the best movies in the 'based on a true story' genre in recent times:

The Mauritanian (2021) (with Jodie Foster playing an exellent humanitarian activist and lawyer)

Because it's such a good movie:

The fact that Murder in the First didn't even get any Oscar nominations, not even for Kevin Bacon's excellent performance, says a lot about what a joke the Oscar awards are.

Especially once you see that Forrest Gump (1994) got the Oscar for best movie and Tom Hanks (in Forrest Gump) best actor in March 1995. Murder in the First was released in Jan. 1995. It wasn't even among the nominations (also not at the next Oscars).

If you then look at the other nominations for various Oscars, like Four Weddings and a Funeral for best picture and Pulp Fiction a bunch of nominations (Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress) and 1 Oscar for Best Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen... it becomes an even bigger joke of a marketing ploy called "Academy Awards".

I guess I'm looking at the wrong year anyway, but Murder in the First doesn't show up in the next Academy Awards either. Instead among the nominations you see lame movies like Babe and Sense and Sensibility, and a movie that I've never heard of, that seems to touch on a somewhat similar subject, Dead Man Walking. Wikipedia says:

Sister Helen Prejean (Sarandon) establishes a special relationship with Matthew Poncelet (Penn), a character based on convicted murderers Elmo Patrick Sonnier and Robert Lee Willie. He is a prisoner on death row in Louisiana, and she visits him as his spiritual adviser after corresponding with him.

The film was a critical and commercial success; it grossed $83 million on a budget of $11 million and received praise for the performances of Penn and Sarandon, as well as Robbins' direction. Sarandon's performance won her the Academy Award for Best Actress, while Robbins, Penn and Bruce Springsteen were nominated for Best Director, Best Actor and Best Original Song, respectively, for the single "Dead Man Walkin'".

Totally not in the same league as Murder in the First.

Perhaps some Americans don't like to reminded that their country has never been and never will be the shining beacon of hope and freedom they are taught it is by their government propaganda in their schools and media.* The Mauritanian (2021) addressing the blatant torture of innocent people in order to support the warprofiteering involved with the so-called "War on Terror" also seems mostly ignored in the US (IMDB rating: 7.4, less than 50k votes; still nominated for 5 BAFTA awards though, 3 wins; but BAFTA is British).

*: I was reminded of that when I recently read the thread "Freedom . Have you Forgotten" on the Social Issues & Civil Unrest subforum, with the OP saying things like:

I know full well what foreigners think of Americans . Fat , Lazy , Dumb and of course Guns. Most of the world has a general dis-like for Americans and most Americans don't realize this . It's not that they hate Americans it's that they hate our way of life , the opportunistic nature of American society is a one of a kind thing on Planet Earth and Jealousy is a very real thing.

America was originally founded to stand in contrast to that of the other European nations , Everything American was flipped to be the opposite of Old Europe e.g. the Monarchy , ... and this was all done for a Reason . THE OPPRESSIVE GOVERNMENT THAT OUR FOUNDING FATHERS WERE ESCAPING

The Constitution was written to ensure America would be different that America would be an improvement over what it is that we fought a bloody War with , Our Founders were improving upon the Failures of what it is they lived through . The Original 10 Constitutional Amendments were Written to stand through time and ensure that America would remain a beacon of Freedom to the rest of the world , Each Amendment represented a Freedom that was denied to the original founders of America .

Americans take for granted things like Religious Freedom which will get you killed in other countries , Our freedoms to have Firearms which basically no other country on Earth has , Our Freedoms to Work and Pursue a better life which does not exist in Socialist European countries the more you work in those countries the more they Tax you it's very simple the Government tells you how much you can have end of story. They control weird things like what kind of Car you can Drive and What kind of Television you can have etc etc etc the list goes on .

FREEDOM HAS A PRICE and this includes the Freedom of Speech people can say what they want when they want and again in other countries this will get you killed , The right to a Fair Trial and this includes Rapist, Murderers and Repeat offenders and again other countries they would just kill your ass or lock you up and work you to death . ...

I guess the right to a fair trial didn't count for Henry Young (Murder in the First, he was sent back to Alcatraz and killed there, pardon the spoiler) and those locked up and tortured at Guantanamo Bay without any trial whatsoever (The Mauritanian), because the government needed to look hard on terrorism and appear to have succes (when the actual terrorists of 9/11 already died in the attacks and the man pointed to as the organizer, Bin Laden, was a buddy of the CIA; by the way, they locked up and tortured the Mauritanian because of his alledged connection to Bin Laden, something having to do with a phone call, see movie for details).

While I'm at it:

And uhh...

I think the theme of the day back then was family fun and patriotic drama, this was before the movie industry took a dark turn. Now you've got all sorts of down and dirty shows and movies that wouldnt have won a funder back in the 1990s. Now, if your movie isnt counterculture and counterintuitive and filled with total disgusting stuff, it wont get on the big screen. Take a look. all the big gun action movies are gone, all the good old unperverted family movies are gone, its all trash top to bottom with a few diamonds in the gutter. There might be 1-3 movies a year that I would be willing to go see, if I am lucky. Years ago youd have a hard time deciding what youd like to see because so many of the movies were going to be so great youd want to see them all.
