The former Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, and anti-apartheid activist Desmond Tutu sadly passed away today.
www.news24.com...

Controversial to some (although never really divisive since 1994) on the more extremist margins of the right and left, at least in a historical sense (he wasn't much in public life for over a decade).

The first black person and African to hold the Anglican church positions that he did, he was also known for supporting female priests, LGBT rights and heading the investigation into apartheid-era crimes called The Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
Also often credited for coining the "rainbow nation" phraseology for South Africans.
A fierce critic of apartheid (and dalliances with Marxist organizations that brought critique from some local and international quarters), but also later a critic of ANC figures, notably former South African Presidents Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma.

But certainly a pivotal figure of the late 20th century, a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, and someone who will be remembered for his compassion and humanity.
Rest in piece Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.

Desmond Mpilo Tutu OMSG CH (7 October 1931 – 26 December 2021) was a South African Anglican bishop and theologian, known for his work as an anti-apartheid and human rights activist. He was the bishop of Johannesburg from 1985 to 1986 and then the archbishop of Cape Town from 1986 to 1996, in both cases being the first black African to hold the position. Theologically, he sought to fuse ideas from black theology with African theology.

Depends if you think calling for BDS on Israel is not divisive.

Archbishop Tutu chose a "green burial" known as aquamation.
