Those with substance-use disorders face a greater vulnerability to COVID-19

New COVID-19 Science: A US government website that looks at the entire scope of drug abuse issues now reports that substance abuse decreases human resistance to COVID-19 following vaccination:

Everyone, I just tried twice to add this working link to ATS, but it's apparently a bit toooo long, so no luck. The website is drugabuse dot gov, and look under news events, then under news releases, for October 2021. Title of the news release is: People with substance use disorders may be at higher risk for sars cov 2 breakthrough infections.

Many alternative healing disciplines, such as naturopathic physicians, macrobiotic counselors, acupuncture specialists and others have published books as well as specific research results that find a higher risk of illness in general for humans who consume highly processed foods, most prescription drugs, recreational drugs, the common risk factor being that almost all of these substances are acidic in nature. 60 years ago, the first acid-alkaline diet book in print was from a macrobiotic counselor; it discussed how the human body at birth is very slightly alkaline. Health-supporting lifestyles are often most successful when the person is then able to maintain that slight alkaline blood balance (pH).

Controlled substances are typically quite acidic. The only US prescription drug I know of (Dilantin) that is alkaline is a prescription heart medication derived from the foxglove plant.

So the suggestion in this post is that very often, we have some degree of control over not only the foods we eat but also any supplements or other substances we consume. We can choose foods and other substances, therefore, that strengthen our immune systems, which is a good idea in the midst of a pandemic.

Please. Enough with the Covid already.

For Mark08 and everyone, the COVID-19 pandemic is *not* remotely over. My family members working in health care would very much like for the pandemic to be over, but it's not.

That is exactly how you would think it would turn out with many of the substances some people abuse.

We have a lot of long time tweekers around here and last year I was telling the ones I see that they had a higher risk for serious illness, based on my assumption that their habit was a high risk condition for covid. They are still alive and kicking despite a low vaccination rate in my county and a poorly controlled, rampant transmission in my area. That's just my personal observation.

If one is going to indulge in meth and other such drugs I think COVID is the least of their worries.

I had an ex girlfriend who died from chemical pneumonia because she was snorting too much dope.

People with unhealthy lifesytles get sick more than those with a healthy lifestyle.

This scientific breakthough must be the greatest in the history of all knowlege,confirming that the government are light years ahead of us monkey brained mortals.

tamusan and everyone, it could also be that people trying to solve their addiction problems are meanwhile being very careful about how often they go out and about. If so, they would be more protected against COVID-19 than one might think. Recent published science articles are now reporting more data on the aerosol transmission mechanism that is a primary driver of the pandemic.

The stores and malls I recently visited (briefly) appear to have much the same ventilation methods as before the pandemic. That's not good if COVID-19 is transmitted primarily thru aerosols. A few buildings definitely have better ventilation this year, such as some family-owned grocery stores.

Most of the full outdoor store tents don't provide enough ventilation for safety, either. Fully closed sides on a restaurant tent is *not* the way to go, not in 2021.

Unfortunately, her mother enabled alot of party all day lifestyle and now she's a mother who lost a child.

COVID is a mild disease and I can certainly see it being worse in people who destroy their bodies. But again, the drugs are what's doing the damage and COVID is just an ancillary factor.

I haven't the experience of losing a child, but it must be devastating.

I also think covid from this virus is on the mild side. My only concern is how they are saying that the hospitals are full of covid patients and non-covid emergencies are being turned away or people with cancer cannot get surgery. I would think they were making it up if I wasn't seeing it with my own eyes. Hospitalizations for covid have been recently reducing, and hopefully that trend continues.

Endemic. Pandemic is over.

It won't be over until enough people have contracted the virus and recovered.

The government and news media could tell us the truth and the pandemic would be over with tomorrow.

Covid-19 would be relegated to the same status as the flu.... Like it should be.

the only 'substance use disorder' i'm worried about is the forced/coerced 'covid vaccine' type.
