My industry is in need of talented graphic designers. Set dec, Set design, costuming, etc. The art dept. of any large production studio always need crew to work on set.

It may not be exactly your career path but it's a great community and pays very well. Union proud, Union Strong....

Perhaps start as an apprentice or intern. There is more to art than meets the eye.

BTW....we're hard working capitalist!!

Many of the most famous artists went to their graves as starving artists. Their work went largely unnoticed until after their deaths.

As a kid once I thought I wanted to be an artist. In the back of Boys Life magazine (a magazine for Boy Scouts) once there was this picture of a cartoon squirrel. The caption underneath it said if you could draw this squirrel you were probably an artist and eligible to win a slot at some prestigious and exclusive art school. So I got out a sheet of paper and I traced over the squirrel and sent it to them. It was a pretty crappy tracing job too. A few weeks later a letter arrived in the mail, and it said that it had been a really hard decision, but that I'd won first prize out of thousands of other candidates! Even better, it was completely "free".* Of course I hurriedly filled out the attached application.

I think I was on my way to the mailbox with it when Mom asked what I was doing.

*Yeah, it was "free" to send in your application, and then they sent you a whole gob of art supplies which were also "free"...IF you signed up for their very expensive "NOT free" school. If you decided at any point that their school wasn't right for you, you could kindly mail them a check for $95 dollars for all the "free" art supplies!

Capitalism and art go together like hand in glove.

I also learned about fine print that day.

Ever since then, whenever I see one of those ads I sketch out whatever it is and mail it to them. Heck, I've even drawn something completely different and sent it to them, and what do you know...I won 1st place in every single one of them! I guess I really am a great artist afterall.

So, from one "artist" to another...the cyber security field is where it's at, and it's HOT right now. Top dollar in the market, just name your price. I just hired a guy, and a gal, for exactly this and to get them I have to pay them more than I make, like a LOT more! They are in serious demand right now!

You'll have plenty of time to sit back and enjoy your spare time painting or drawing with the money and benefits you get from Infosec.

A lot of the responses here prove your point.

Read between the lines here. It's not just art, it's any kind of aspiration beyond the ugliest definition of success. You can't have it because communism.

Bottom line is you make your choices. Do you want money or do you want fulfilment? It's possible to have both but you have to make one of them the driver. Make enough money, you'll have the time to follow your dreams. Learn to live with yourself and you'll be surprised how much you can do without.

to make a living or be noticed you gotta be really good.

My band set up downtown the other day and played a free show for anyone who came by. Wasn't expecting to make any money doing it, just have some fun with my friends.

We ended up making 450 bucks. Making money was not our goal, having fun and giving people a good time was.

Michelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael...in fact, ALL the Ninja Turtles had patrons which made their work possible.

It killed Hitlers too, when it said if only he went to art school. Yet he apparently hated Universal Education, all the while declaring national socialism, an Marxist Communism is essentially the same thing.

Clark Kent did not define himself by his job as a reporter.
Bruce Wayne did not define himself by his job as a multimillionaire.
And Wolverine did not . . . ok, well yea, there are always exceptions

Back in highschool I had a strong interest in drawing. As I grew older I learned that being an artist really isn't a stable or dependable form of income. We have all heard the term "starving artist" and I really didn't want to become one of them. Eventually I settled on a cyber sec major in college and have substantially less time to sink into drawing. (If it wasn't art, it def would've been something technological if I was more educated in the subject at the time)

I feel like there was a lot of lost potential given my interest in it though. Animation looks fun but learning something new this late into college unrelated to your degree is kind of a mess. There's so may things in this world that fascinate me but limited time to pursue them.

I think it's pretty scuffed how a lot of the creative paths relating to art, music, acting are so unstable in terms of surviving in a capitalist driven economy :/

Plenty of people make a living doing their art.

You made a choice. Capitalism didn't make that choice. Nobody held a gun to your head and told you to make that choice. You chose to have a job, benefits... "Security."

That's it. Just like all the other sheep out there crying for the government to take care of them, their employer to take care of them...

Grow a set of testicles and live your own life.

Have you been to a starving artist art sales event? THOUSANDS upon thousands pieces of art. Capitalism is what gives artists and their art a chance. After all, who will buy your art but an evil capitalist to hang on their million dollar mansion walls?
COMPETITION kills the dreams. Trying to get your work noticed in the sea of art and expression is a tough row to hoe. It takes talent, endurance, patience and luck. Even then there are no guarantees. Unless you're Hunter Biden.

Why not do commissions? Create art that you like and price it high, and then do commissions for people who like your art style and work out a price.

You have to know your buyers.

Capitalism isn't to blame. It's your marketing skills.
