I am not surprised

how can they have a campaign slogan , PROTECT THE NHS and build back stronger

Tory MP;s vote against legal bid to protect NHS

Tory MPs have voted down a legal bid which was aimed at protecting the NHS in post-Brexit trade deals. The House of Lords passed an amendment last month which would have blocked any trade deal that “undermines or restricts” the ability to provide “a comprehensive publicly funded health service free at the point of delivery”. The amendment also would have blocked “the sale of patient data” in any trade deal unless the proceeds were ploughed back into UK health and care services, along with a string of other restrictions.

this isnt a surprise to many opponents of the tories
this is disgusting , they are liars and thieves

I sense an NHS strike coming

the tory party voted unanimously against

The amendment was defeated in the Commons by 357 votes to 266. All those voting against it were Conservatives, and no Conservatives voted in favour.

this should be the final straw for the tories in the UK , if they win the next election i sense civil disobedience and possibly a civil war

# the tories , #S

I sense the Tories being voted out at the next election and struggling to attract many young people for an entire generation. Of course there will be young people who vote for them, particularly from affluent families, but even amongst my own family and friends families, the younger generation are very vocal about this administration and the shameful way it carries out its business.

Principles seem to have gone out the window in politics and how not one cabinet member has resigned, despite the many, many errors they have made, is beyond me.

They look at all of our assets and only see pound signs. They care not one jot about the people, only themselves and their donors, conserving the olde ways of running a modern country.

Is this the irony to end all irony’s? BJ and his cabinet have been telling us all to protect the NHS for nearly a year by restricting our freedoms and liberties. Now they go and vote against an amendment aimed at protecting it?

Hypocrites and virtue signalers the lot of them. Bare faced liars and low IQ schemers.. this is what years of inbreeding gets you. A big Brexit campaign promise was that money sent to the EU could instead be spent on the NHS...

Why don’t people march down to Westminster and throw them all out? I’m so tired of living in such a spineless, brainwashed nation of Jeremy Kyle type low life’s.

Stop the world I’m getting off.

You've got that wrong. After the sale of the NHS the Tories will be RICH hypocrites and liars and in consequence will not give a jot about what the people do or say.

This seems to be just another attempt by the House of Lords to scupper any future post Brexit success. Why would we want the House of Lords restricting our ability to make trade deals in the future.

What, specifically, has been voted down on?

Just because a daily rag uses the words "protect the NHS" doesn't mean that is the point of the amendment. Just look at the House of Lords track record on anything Brexit. Gee I wonder why the most elite and aristocratic section of our government would be against moves that move us away from globalisation.

Shadow Trade Secretary Emily Thornberry said today: “This amendment cuts to the chase of the debate over whether the NHS is on the table when it comes to trade negotiations.

Nice and unbiased commentary there....

Why not include the conservative reasoning and reaction?

But Trade Minister Greg Hands hit back: “We do not see the need for this amendment, as protecting the NHS is already a top priority in negotiations.”

He said: “We have all witnessed the heroic efforts of the NHS through the Covid-19 pandemic, and we are immensely grateful for all that it has accomplished.

“The idea that we would now seek to sell off the NHS to foreign corporations is, frankly, offensive and absurd.

“The NHS is not on the table. The NHS is not and never will be for sale.”

I think the most important thing to say is, what specific threat exists to the NHS? Isn't this just more Brexit bashing nonsense. Chlorinated chickens, crashing sterling and private healthcare scare stories. None of them were or are based in reality. All of them have been used as a club to beat over the head of the Tory government and anyone who wanted to leave the EU. All of them will be forgotten when the next imaginary hot topic comes up.

I don't see a bad future for the Tories, but a lot of it depends on how Brexit goes. I don't see a good future for labour unless Brexit goes astronomically wrong. But if it goes well, how will people forgive them, not just for actively fighting against it for 4 years, but more, for doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING PRODUCTIVE for the entire duration.

They have could have accepted Brexit and then GOT INVOLVED in making sure they had a Brexit they could stomach, but instead they used their soapboxes to denigrate half the population as stupid racist pigs whilst screaming into the wind about this and that fantastical nightmare. Children.

I wouldn’t trust a Tory to look after my dog, let alone the NHS. An idea and institution they were so vehemently against for many years. If there is money to be made for themselves or their donors, they would sell their granny if that’s what was required of them.

It’s quite clear they know access to our NHS is a great negotiation tool, and they will use it if it guarantees a great deal for them and their cronies. Bugger the plebs, they should know their place.

the tories never even wanted the NHS and have been trying to privitise it for years, their track record for selling off public assets is well known

tories claim the NHS is not up for sale

not that I need to post this as many already know

a short history of privitisation in the UK

you really trust them not to sell it off ?

Oh dear. You've never heard of the boiling frog, have you?

Chlorinated chicken? What does the legislation say?

Crashing sterling? What does that data say?

Private healthcare scare stories? What does the British Medical Association say?

These things don't happen at once. They happen slowly. If they are reported, they are presented way behind Pep Guardiola's opinions and the latest trouty photo of some useless reality TV celebrity.

Take the NHS. The government has been chipping away at it since 1992. Quasimarketise. Introduce an internal market, everything now has a price. Outsource the loo paper supply, move on to the cleaning and security and car parks, give the GPs more freedom to manage their practice finances, outsource minor operations....

Now we're at a crossroads. Every last minister in Johnson's cabinet is a free marketeer and COVID has given them an ideal reason to "reform" the NHS. So what if the private sector has made a world-class bollix of track and trace? Since when has spectacular failure stopped the likes of G4S and Capita getting another billion pound government contract? The usual suspects will be invited to tender for more and more NHS contracts.

We can already pay for extras in the NHS and we'll soon be offered a chance to move a little further up the waiting list, at a cost. If they don't cough up, people''ll wait a little longer. Not enough to cause a scandal but a little here and a little there. The people who will make a fuss are the ones who can afford to pay. Who cares about them? Do they even vote?

We'll be offered the chance to pay a little more for that replacement kneecap instead of the NHS one. We'll be offered the chance to pay a little more to have the 2025 lasermatic treatment instead of the old fashioned 2021. Bit by bit, always presented as a positive, always a little less accountability, always a little more profit. Does this bother you? You must be a Marxist.

Look at public transport in the UK. Every last bolt on a bus, every last cable on a train has been privatised. The French own a chunk of the railway and bus system. The Chinese own the cabling on the London Underground. Local authorities and Transport for London are there to issue contracts with any kind of supervision limited by law. Now we have the most expensive and lest effective public transport system in Europe - a return ticket on London Underground costs almost as much as a weekly pass for the whole of Barcelona's public transport. Did you notice it happening? Or, like Margaret Thatcher suggested, do you dismiss it because public transport is for losers?

But, hey, blue passports and all that.

Nah. That statistic is another Tory lie, beloved of Daniel Hannan and his pals.

How many NHS workers are employed by the NHS? None.

Same as all British public services, the NHS has been carved up into business units. "NHS staff" are employed by their local health trusts, GP practices and private service providers.

Divide and rule.

I vote on an election by election basis and will choose who to vote for at that time, rather than being dyed in the wool one party or another (as some posters may be).

But this is the daily mirror, which will always be anti Conservative regardless of the actual facts of the matter, let's not pretend otherwise. What this essentially seems to be is a bill that takes away the right for private companies to bid to provide service to the NHS. Such practice has been in place for decades and was actually used most in the Blair/Brown years - something that the Mirror seems to have conveniently forgotten about or it's not in their interest to inform the reader about.

This doesn't threaten free at the point of contact and the Mirror knows that. It's an amendment that wasn't really necessary from reading through it so not sure what the point is. Apart from to distort the actual context of the bill and what it is an amendment to. Sensationalism, but it got quite a few on here exercised about it so maybe that's healthy.

Your post makes little to no sense. Yes, NHS workers are paid by their particular trust or practice, which draws its budget from the National health service. it's obvious where the trust/service gets the money from as it shows how the NHS has allocated budget and where and on what it's being spent.

Not quite sure why that isn't obvious.

Same goes for the SNP but as they're Scottish and not English I suppose that doesn't matter.

You seem to forget , or willfully ignore the fact that it was Labour under Tony Blair who started the privatisation of the NHS with their Private Finance Initiative , hospitals on the cheap that have eneded up costing the tax payer dearly.

The question is less around voting Tories out of power, I think, and more about who would you vote into power?

Keir Starmer isn't Keir Hardie. Labour has yet to energise any empathy in me.

Fortunately, the Welsh are led by Adam Price, who not only is an ex-miner, but also the namesake of the chap who wrote Borgen! So maybe there is a political plotline out there somewhere.

A National Health Service was the idea of and old Liberal MP, the Liberals (not the modern so called Liberal Democrats that have very little in common with the old Wigs) however never put it into action and it took a Great forward thinking Labour Government to do so, they established the NHS, gave us PUBLIC Library's, Swimming Pool's, Housing, Protected our private industry with Subsidies and Workers with Actual Employment Rights as well as Nationalized our Most important Assets that WOULD have failed after the war had they not been nationalised and also created huge public housing schemes (some of which became disasters because of short cuts during there building and rewriting by corrupt councils to squirrel away money into private account's etc), they also gave us FREE college and university education, a national pension scheme and rights for the elderly.

Then after over 30 years of squirming, cursing and hating this the Tory's finally gained a leader that could get away with demolishing this in the form of Margaret Thatcher, she was highly unpopular after her first term was less than half way through but she was saved by the Argentinian Invasion of the Falkland islands and the subsequent swelling of nationalism that this gave her as well as a popularity boost thanks not to her but to the British Service Personnel that laid there lives on the line to retake those islands from the invaders.

So she was then able to get back into power, she sold off the council housing, took away the subsidies from private industry, legalized chemicals in our food and all manner of substances for animals on our farms and sold off as much of the state owned industry as she could while also shutting down the mines and killing our ship building industry.

She was involved in the disposal of South Africa's nuclear arsenal before the National Congress could get there hands on them - but of course SHE had hers on them and through a young Tory intern by the Name of DAVID CAMERON she arranged an illegal hand over of some of those bomb's to the Saudi Arabian's, they were left overnight with no guard in a compound in Arabia and of course vanished while the Tory party then received a large donation from the Saudi royal family (Remember the Tory party is funded privately and most of its biggest investors are not from Britain unlike the Labour Party that is funded almost exclusively by voluntary donation's of working union members).

After her we got the short lived John Major leadership - another Tory, mostly a middling leader and nothing spectacular he did one thing for which he is not popular he sold off our Railway's.

After them came the CORRUPT leadership of Tony Blair and then Gordon Brown, they were to say the least NOT LABOUR but something far more akin to the Tory's and further remaining national assets were sold off, our nation was DEVOLVED (Divide and Conquer, too many chef's in the kitchen I am sure you are familiar with the phrases and there meaning), after this our council's became hives of corruption with chief executives no longer seeing themselves as public servants but often paying themselves six figure sum's out of council tax payers money, they also abolished student grant's and brought in student loans affectively ending free college and university education in the country.

Then we got Cameron (yes the same Cameron that arranged the illegal nuclear arms deal with Saudi Arabia, May and Now Johnson, Sell off of the Post office and Royal Mail, you are lucky if you get your letter these day's as the now employ anyone as a postman and half the time they are lag's that can either not be bothered to put the letters in the right doors or even rob them if they think they have money or other valuables in them - not helped by the fact the PRIVATISED mail sorting offices employed EU nationals as cheap labour with no criminal records check's and huge amounts of the British publics details then ended up in eastern European gangsters hands.

The truth is the Tory's have DESTROYED our nation, we need some of what Corbyn (Yes he would have been a disaster but some of his ideas were correct) suggested, renationalization of our important national assets the Tory's sold (to themselves and there friends while making a fortune out of this insider trading).

And we need to once again subsidise our industry in the face of stiff international competition.

Restore our national pension system (there is nothing wrong with having a private pension HOWEVER most of those are owned by Hedge fund's that are owned by the Tory's and there friends (a foolish man piled up treasure into his barn but before he could use it he died who then benefited from his treasure?), we need to tell the Yank's corporations they can NOT have our NHS (As Pfizer is so desperate to get it's hands on) and we need to get the British Public to wake up from this lunatic moronic idiocy of constantly voting these scoundrels into power when in fact they are actually even bigger crook's and thieves than the worst of Labour - Militant - Ever was (and that is saying something Militant were scum).

We need OLD post war Labour back simple as that.
