NEWS BREAKING ALERT: The Kenyan military says that the attack on the U.S.-Kenyan military base in Kenya has been "successfully repelled," according to VOA (1:46 a.m. ET 1/5/20)
The U.S. military has confirmed to ABC News that there has been a terror attack on a military base in Kenya that houses some U.S. military personnel.
The Somali terror group al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the attack that Kenyan authorities said had been repelled with four militants killed in the fighting.
The Al Qaeda affiliate claimed that their fighters had taken control of a portion of the base, a claim that could not be verified.
Last week al-Shabab carried out a car bomb attack in the heart of Mogadishu that killed at least 80 civilians.
About 500 U.S. troops are stationed inside Somalia assisting and advising that country’s military in its fight against the terror group.
The US military has acknowledged the attack by Al-Shabaab carried out on Sunday morning at Manda Bay Airfield in Lamu.
A statement by the US Africa Command however noted that the airfield has been cleared and the process of securing it is going on.
"The security situation at Manda Bay is fluid. Al-Shabaab is a terrorist group that has repeatedly communicated an intent to attack U.S. interests," the statement said.
Al-Shabaab has put out multiple press releases exaggerating the security situation on the ground, which is a proven practice by the terror organization. "Al-Shabaab resorts to lies, coercion, and the exertion of force to bolster their reputation to create false headlines," said Maj. Gen. William Gayler, U.S. Africa Command director of operations.
One U.S. service member and two American Department of Defense contractors were killed in a terror attack on a military base in Kenya that houses some U.S. military personnel.
The Somali terror group al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the attack that Kenyan authorities said had been repelled with four militants killed in the fighting.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of our teammates who lost their lives today," U.S. Army Gen. Stephen Townsend, commander of U.S. Africa Command, said in a statement Sunday afternoon.
"As we honor their sacrifice, let's also harden our resolve. Alongside our African and international partners, we will pursue those responsible for this attack and al-Shabaab who seeks to harm Americans and U.S. interests."
