Locked in orbit by speed and gravity.

And this is not the answer to my question (phage answered it correct). Something in space is not always orbiting a planet or something that has gravity.

What do you think they are looking for? Who are they watching?
And why?

Why is the USA obsessed with spying on it’s own citizens? It’s nearly as bad as here in the U.K.

...And keep your enemies closer.

This is the midwest of the USA.
They will shoot the balloons out of the sky.

I didn't realize the Midwest was so interesting.

Pretty sure they can go walk around and talk to people in those states.

The real reason is more likely some politician's kid owns a balloon company and needs some high dollar sales.

Well, it can show the plate is there but it certainly cannot read it because the plate is hardly bigger than a foot.

Not to mention that the plate is not mounted on the roof of your car.

I've long wondered why people don't think of that when they talk about satellites being able to read your license plate.

I have to get back to you on this. You had been absolute correct! The angled ones are really from airplanes.

Shame on me.

Well, high altitude spying in general.

Is there any reason why satellites aren't better for this? Seems like a lot of work to release balloons and retrieve them day after day.

Why can't we just use one of the already over 5,000 satellites in orbit?

Many times these balloons release stuff so computers can test different things.

Remember in the movie twister those little balls that sent back info when it got picked up in the tornado, now they use microscopic stuff , they release it in the sky and follow its path, and other stuff.
Kinda like chem trails stuff

The military has been flying global hawks over the border for years, they have a 400 mile view, undoubtedly some newer version of the the gorgon stare as well - on top of this high altitude surveillance platforms like floating triangles are easy, so why not. Add that to the fact they could read your licence plate and find undersea treasure from orbit in the 1960's I'm sure satellites add in all things. Along with keyholes ability to see depressions up to 5km deep aka shelters...done.

So basically, with these things you wouldnt even need space satellites.

The more you think they are doing something, the more they get to use that fear you have.
