EU message for migrants: You can live the Gambian Dream – in Gambia

Sometimes I read these things and laugh, but it isn't a joke, they are dead serious.

It is interesting to follow European news. We seem to be following in their footsteps, maybe a year or two behind. Maybe we need to send all the caravan migrants to Belize (sarc)

But now the European Union is pouring hundreds of millions of euros into a large regional experiment it hopes will counter The Story. That idea is this: If the countries currently sending migrants to Europe become better places to live, with more opportunities of their own, fewer people will want to leave them. That, in turn, will mean fewer migrants landing on Europe’s shores – or dying even before they arrive.

Who else doesn't think this is going to work, raise your hands.

Raising hand here. Places which needs help to evolve so they would be more "livable" are filled with hard corruption. Take any fundraiser in the World sending help you find huge corruption, massive costs in every level before help which is about 10% of the original amount of money sent by people actually is in use. And about how funds are used they are mostly spent on targets which had no future or intrest of local people in beginning with, money has placebo use like in some art or similar where locals has no income to even join. Where would you put your money if any.. food or lovely park/art happening?. House ? you dont even have money enough to live in...

This is one big scheme .. aid , money to those who already have "all" the money.

Formation of social structure and order is created at the individual level. It's those little rules on cooperation and helping each other, taking pride in maintaining property, respecting others, laws and democratic votes, not stealing or trying to tricks others into paying for your lunch.

That's the problem with these countries ... corruption ... We have expat friends who tell use all the stories of Africa. You have a construction project, everything is in place, the equipment, materials, the crew, architects, engineers, the whole ensemble ready to rock and roll. But there is a snag, according to the local village chief, the road between your base and the construction site is unusable, and their repair machines needs a spare part. These spare parts are very hard to come by but he knows a friend who just might be able to help. A little bit of flash might just put him in the right mood to look in his shed and dig one out. And it will keep going on like this all through the project. Sometimes companies maintain their own repair shops, only to have them broken in, the spares stolen, and suddenly they start appearing in the black market, oblivious to the fast the serial numbers give them away.

Or like South Africa, a reservoir construction project was halted because the locals weren't offered jobs doing the construction.

One of the problems with this idea is that there's a huge issue of brain-drain in many of these third world countries, leaving them with basically entire nations filled with folks on the bottom end of the cognitive distribution scale. Anyone with half a brain left many of these countries years ago for first-world universities and job opportunities abroad, never to return to their homeland.

How do you make a poor, low-skilled workforce higher-skilled when most of the workforce doesn't even have the basic, biological cognitive ability to perform higher skilled work? It's a real problem with no good answer...

This is very true.

I once had a bloke come to install a freeview tv system in my house, and he was from Africa, and we were chatting about what he did there. And he was a nurse in Africa, but here he was in Scotland fitting tv systems because it paid better, and he was waiting to save up money to pass whatever tests he needed to pass to get work as a nurse here in Scotland.

And he felt bad about leaving his country, but he didn't feel safe there anymore, and he wanted his family to have the wealth and safety and options that a life in the UK could provide.

He was a damned good fitter too I might add. Never had a tradesman do such a good job of something as that bloke did.

Queen Elizabeth II is Head Of State of Belize.

She would not be amused.

@alldaylong is that a Dr Who reference, if it is, much respect. if it isn't, it should be

funny, this is marches with what Hillary and John Kerry just said at migrants, interesting, it's like they have the same orders....

I can't lay claim to it.

It was a saying supposed used by Queen Victoria.

It's Queen Victoria, and they did have one Dr. Who episode where they referenced it a lot. Rose and Doctor were in Victorian England and she kept trying to get Queen Victoria to say and irritating Victoria a lot.

Why am I thinking of Abraham Lincoln and the ideas to repatriate freed slaves to Liberia?

I wonder how many of the "Syrian" refugees who are ostensibly from the Middle East want to relocate to Gambia in Africa?

Well, I guess if the Countries infrastructure is upgraded, then why not? It would save a lot of lives and effort (them trying to get to europe).

Stabilize a nation that is traditionally a bit run down, invest in it, bring in people from all over the world and then exploit the hell out for them for cheap labor, not palatable sounding but if it work's then it will work and who know's Gambia could then find itself being the economic China of the future as western sources AND Chinese sources start to withdraw from the Chinese and east Asian economy's and look for better opportunity's elsewhere.

Doubt it will work though African is just far too unstable with too many warlord's and tribal disputes - in some way's it's as bad as Afghanistan but a hell of a lot larger.

It's the only solution, but it won't happen because greed knows no boundaries and where there are people to be exploited, guaranteed that's what will happen.

Yeah, that's true. But the ones doing the exploiting are their own people and that's the problem. To alter that fact you have to have boots on the ground and people are against that.
