The suspect believed to be the notorious Golden State Killer -- who was wanted in a dozen murders and nearly 50 rapes from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s -- was reportedly arrested in California on Wednesday.

Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, was arrested at his Citrus Heights home, located 16 miles northeast of Sacramento, on two counts of murder, a law enforcement source told FOX40. He is reportedly on suicide watch and being held at the Sacramento County jail.

Golden State Killer suspect arrested in California, reports say

Wow....this is pretty big if it indeed turns out to be him. One of the most infamous rapists/murderers ever.

I wonder what the break in the case actually was that pointed to him.

Pretty good likeness from drawing to his younger pic...even to the small smirk and his nose...

When I see Sacramento, it reminds me of another serial killer called the Vampire of Sacramento.

I’ve lived in and around Sacramento all my life but I only vaguely remember the Vampire.

The Golden State Killer (AKA the the East Area Rapist) was active at the time I was living in his “hunting grounds”.

If proven, this is very good news!

(And let’s not forget Dorthea Poente (sp?)!)

Perhaps a small bio of him might allow you to remember a little bit.

ah yes... The original night stalker.

Now if they can just crack that whole Zodiac Killer thing. A miniseries was done a few months back on Zodiac. They came up with 2 very good candidates. They also possibly cracked the big cypher (340 I think). Freaky as hell.

Hopefully the suspect is the right guy and hopefully affected family and friends can finally get some closure.

The original Night Stalker

They had the stalkers DNA on file since that is how they linked a lot of the murders to just one person.

WARNING - some may find this unsettling to listen to. A message the night stalker left on one of his victims answering machine.

Stuff they don't want you to know also did a segment on the original night stalker.

The Night Stalker made his last phone call in 1991. He called up a former victim that survived his attack. After that call he dropped of the face of the earth.

I should have taken your warning more seriously. Normally I don’t get creeped out by things. Even though the previous owner of my home murdered his wife here then killed himself in the living area. But that message on the answering machine is freaking creepy.

Do you think it's possible he got offed by a vigilante? I believe that some serial killers were offed in secluded areas by vigilante or victims seeking revenge.

Anything is possible however in this case I think the police have the right guy (thats based on the killers DNA being on file).

There are serial killers who have been killed by their victims (or accomplices) over the decades. Poetic justice imo...

* - The Candyman (Dean Corll) - killed by an accomplice he turned against.

* - Neal Falls - While attempting to murder his victim his victim grabbed a rake and began using it on the guy. When Falls put his gun down to take the rake away the victim grabbed his gun and killed him. He was wanted in 20 states. His death was in 2015.

* - Wayne Nance (Missoula mauler) - He entered the house of a potential victim intending to kill both the man and woman. After he stabbed one victim the male got a gun, surprising the suspect, and shot him in the head.

There are anywhere from 30 to 50 active serial killers in the US at any given time. One of the biggest issues law enforcement has is where one person kills multiple persons in multiple jurisdictions. VICAP was created so law enforcement could enter detailed information into a national database of unknown victims who were killed. They have found that long haul truck drivers seem to be at the front of serial killing since they are constantly on the move.

How did this guy go so long without being caught? Turns out he is a former police officer.

Makes me wonder how many international serial killers are around....

I used to study Zodiac and did a ton of research, literally for years. My conclusion is that Zodiac was a ranch hand or relative of a ranch hand that worked on movie sets and used livestock branding guide for his symbols. Branding guides were often hand written by ranch hands which would make his particular guide not available to all at the time...anywho...I have up on it a while back because the major players in the research have gigantic egos and don't care for fresh ideas.

From our U2U message -
Ross Sullivan - suspect in Zodiac killings.

Reference the New York info I talked about - Sullivan is from there and moved back at one point.

East Area Rapist/Golden State Killer

So crazy...its like when he realized that forensic evidence began being utilized he just stopped....almost knowing he'd be caught and couldn't outwit the system. Had he ever been caught committing a crime since forensic evidence began he would have been caught.

He may go on killing albeit in more low key ways. Even with the advances in forensic science, there will always be serial killings. Look at the Long Island Serial Killer. He's still at large.

True however when it comes to serial killers their psychological impulses tend to view forensics as nothing more than a challenge. They think they are better than everyone else, especially law enforcement (just look at the Zodiac Killer and his taunting).

and one theory they are taking seriously is he is active law enforcement.

Sadly they think he is still active and has another undiscovered dump site for his victims. The discovery of his current dumpsite was accidental. An off duty officer and his K-9 were doing some training along the beach line and came across the first body.

The same scenario held for the Mesa bone collector. A lady walking her dog through an undeveloped part of Mesa's west side came across a bone sticking out of the ground. She (if I remember correctly) sent a text message to a family member who was a nurse and she confirmed it was a human bone and to call the police. That resulted in finding that serial killers dump site and a c4rap ton of victims.

Canada has one (or a few) working the same area along a highway known as the highway of tears. More than 40+ women have gone missing with bodies being found every now and then.

Even dormant serial killers cant resist not being in the lime light. Dennis Rader (The BTK killer from Wichita Kansas) did his killings from the 70's and stopped in 1991. He remained quiet until 2004 when he decided to send letters again to media outlets. He was so full of himself that he made a fatal mistake by sending info to the media using a floppy disk. Examination of that disk led them to his church and his name (both were on the disk unbeknownst to him).

That idiot even asked the police if they had the capability to trace him if he sent them a disk, they of course told him "No".

Not all serial killers want attention. I highly recommending reading the book A Serial Killer in Nazi Berlin by Scott Andrew Selby. The book is about a serial killer in Nazi Germany and while he did get caught, he managed to get away for a while because he wasn't seeking attention and also when the Nazi authorities first found out about it, they covered it up because they are scared it will break the illusion of them being all powerful.

Sacramento county Sheriff stated Deangelo most likely was committing these crimes while being an active police officer. The sheriff said he has been a suspect and was under surveillance for some time. They retrieved some discarded items that contained his DNA and got a match.

I remember it had been a popular theory for a long time that the Golden State Killer was a police officer. I often wondered myself simply because of how he would surprise and control his victims by flashing a bright flashlight in their eyes. Such a cop move.
