I was browsing the Web and i came across this interesting article. Basically what is quoted is that there have been no great inventions from any Muslim Countries for over a 100 years. Heres the Quote and Website ( i cant vouch for the website as ive never visited it before )

"Although we owe much to Islam handing on to the West many of the treasures of Greek thought, the beginnings of calculus, Aristotelian thought during the period known in the West as the dark ages, it is sad to relate that no great invention has come for many hundred years from Muslim countries,"

Lord Carey ( Former Archbishop of Canterbury )

Here are a couple of sites confirming the original quote

Now i was a little taken aback by this so i did a search for Muslim great Muslim Inventions over the last 100 years, and was surprised to find that there have been no major advances in Science, Medicine or any other Inventions that have had a major impact on the modern World for over 100 years.
So i sat back and wondered why this could be, is it the Religion? Or perhaps that Muslim Countries may be too inward looking? Or could it be that Islam views the Sciences as heretical in some way? So if there are any Muslims or anyone who can throw some light on this for me i would appreciate it. Also if hard-line Muslims got their way and we were all converted would this mean an end to scientific advancement?

I did a search and this does not seem to have been discussed before.

When the west was going thru the dark ages religion was in charge and most of our advances were in warfare and converting by force and torture.

During that time the muslim world kept light and hope alive and was quite creative.

Islam is now going thru its own version of the dark ages, where religion rules and heretics are slain. All advancements must be in line with scripture or the creator is destroyed.

The dark ages we went thru, they are now experiancing.

They kept light alive while we went thru our tribulation.

It seems it's the least we could do for them. I think it may even be a debt we owe them.

Love and light to each of you,

Wupy

sorry I don't have the time to search for specifics for you, but this site should be of interest. It list 20th century muslim scientists, didn't take the time to check for their inventions though.
Center for Islam & Science

on a side note, I can't remember where but I saw a recent article about a medical breakthrough in a Dubai hospital, was it a heart thing, or a clone thing, I can't remember...ahhh i'll go look

IMO - recognition may be what's lacking, not the actual advances. ...The scientific world is highly politicized.

Or perhaps its because of Europe and Americas repression of the region since colonial time. If you look at muslims in western countries, I'm sure you'll find quite a few scientists and inventors that has been taken by the "brain-drain".

If your country is ravaged by war and famine, you might not find much time for research.

How about the turbulent areas of Africa or South America, many inventions there?

Not a bad question, but I have a feeling the cause would be political rather than religious. I haven't done any research so I could be dead wrong...

So if a Muslim Scientist invented something like say a cure for the common cold and it wasn't in line with scripture he would be persecuted for that? Even though that invention could benefit mankind as a whole?
I agree with the Dark Ages analogy, i think that perhaps the Muslim people in say Iran may be going through a kind of Dark Age with invention. I think the Arch Bishop was saying that no inventions were made by Muslim Countries not individuals outside hard-line Muslim countries, perhaps my title was misleading?
So what about the untilisation of existing inventions? Is it ok to use something that was invented in a non Muslim country?

Wait a minute what about that Dr. Death or that Germ Lady scientist from Iraq and Pakistan don't they count for something?

Also keep in mind that most Arabs as mostly everyone else serious in the scientific fields would have traveled and studied and possibly remained in Western countries. How many American scientists can claim 100% American nationality if there is such a thing? Most if not all American immigrated to this country at one point or another.

and:
Special initiative for research by Arab scientists

So the Arch Bishop was either mis-informed or made a racist statement? I did find what he said very strange as the Iranians for example are a technologically savvy country, or at least they seem to be if you take their Nuclear projects into account.
I wonder what made him say such a thing when there seems to be enough evidence to the contrary?

Mainly right now Muslim counties are not econimcally well off, and the first theing that gets hurt is higher education. Most of the advances if any now come from industrial nations with educated people... no one keeps track of what is there native country

I understand what you are saying but the impression i got from reading what he said was that perhaps the Muslim Religion was the reason behind it.

Do suicide bombers nd global jihad count as inventions? Who else would invent that?

How about using planes as flying weapons, the Japanese did that during WW2, but the Muslims put a new spin on it....

In a way yes, one of the ideas of a musilm religion is that muslim nations are poor because the "evil" christian nations are rich.. What better way to take them down peacefully then using thier education system to better a muslim nation

Again i get what you are saying Netchicken, it does seem that Hard line Muslim Countries are willing to use current tech for their own ends, Nuclear programs in Iran being the most obvious, even though these sciences may be "against Scripture" but i think the Arch Bishop was thinking in broader terms than that, i get the impression he meant that there had not been any advances at all from any Muslim Countries.

Where did we get the idea that Muslim nations are poor???????

Hell, they have the world market on oil!!!

They also have dictators and despots who live lavishly while the people suffer. That doesn't make them poor, it means they have evil, corrupt rulers.

But than again, what nation doesn't?

In my original post I put forth that islam is going thru its own version of the dark ages, Where religion rules above all else. I stand by that.

All that they create now, be it vest bombs or nuclear weapons, they create to further the religious goals of the madmen in charge, who believe they are doing gods will.

A zealot is someone who goes ahead and does what he knows the good lord would do, if the good lord only had all the facts of the matter.

These are the people who are ruling the middle east right now.

They are experiencing there own version of the dark ages.

We need to help them thru it. (and not with bombs either)

Love and light,

Wupy

You would need to suspend disbelief in a number of areas, the first of which is your faith in the former heavyweight champ's ability to engineer and patent a product instead of just fronting it.

Anyway... may the search continue, LOL.

Sometimes scientific advances happen by accident. Maybe they just havent had an accidents lately.
