How does the Top Topics page work?

I'm curious if top topics are manually chosen by staff or if it is automatic. If it is chosen manually, what are the attributes by which the choices are made?

What brings my question up is that for the last two days this post has had more flags than the two threads at the top of the Top Topics page but it has not appeared there and it has piqued my curiosity.

Click the Off Topic button on the right to see BTS topics. I see that at the top right now.

I believe it is automatic, but I'm the wrong person to answer that. Often people don't realize the topic they are looking for is a BTS topic which is the case here.

If I may, i remember someone saying the content is user driven, implying the most read or replied to rises to the top?

Good question anyway.

I believe only threads from select BTS forums like Rant and Dreams & Predictions are included in the top topics stats.
