As usual, nothing will happen, but fun to discuss none-the-less.

"Potential of dangerous asteroid to hit the Earth on January 26
I cannot forget that these same astronomers had warned us several weeks in advance about a totally different asteroid passing near the Earth, coming from an entirely different direction than the Chelyabinsk meteorite (for which we received no warning) the very same day that it exploded over Russia. What are the odds of that? Talk about a coincidental blind spot! Weird."

According to astronomers, there is no threat of the object colliding with our planet.

You called it right, nothing will happen.

I can't remember any warning about the meteorite that exploded over Russia, but I remember an asteroid passing between the Earth and Moon that was the size of a London Bus. Is that what they are thinking of?

Edit - Just searched Sky and the BBC, no mention of it there. Yet, anyway.

But But But....that's my birthday.....I actually could not think of a cooler b-day present than to see a big meteor in the sky, landing near my backyard and being the first to get to it and take it home.

Yep, there are supposed to be a bunch of them over the next few months.

Large Asteroids to Flyby Earth in January Through March. Should Humans Worry?
According to NASA's Near Earth Object Program, there will be 43 asteroids flying close to Earth in January and 25 in February. In March, the number further drops to 15. The biggest threat for January is the asteroid 2007 EJ slated to closely approach the planet on Jan. 12. With a maximum diameter of nearly 1 mile, the asteroid is traveling at around 34,500 miles per hour.
The next-biggest asteroid threat for the first month of the year is the 1991 VE. It features a diameter of 0.87 miles and is expected to skim past the planet on Jan. 17. On Jan. 15 and 23, 0.68-mile wide asteroids will be flying by, the 2014 UF206 and the 2062 Aten, respectively.
At 0.75 miles wide, the 2003 YK118 will follow in Feb. 27. On the same day, the biggest asteroid threat for the quarter, the 1.4-mile wide 2000 EE14 can be expected. For March, the biggest an asteroid will get will be the 2002 GM2, which measures 0.68 miles in diameter. It's scheduled to come close to Earth on March 3.

Distance from earth (closest)
3.1 LD

Size:
650 m

www.spaceweather.com...

Not even close compared to some that have gone by.
At 3.1 LD, it will be 3 times farther away than the moon.
I would get worried if it was at maybe .02 LD
(I've seen them come that close and miss)

Anyways, cool, thanks for giving me something to look up so I can go
"Naaaaah, gonna miss us completely"

Aw, c'mon, you ruined the fun. We already know that but you don't have to come out and say it while providing a source.

Because most of us are tired of the monotony of everyday life, day in day out. The thought of a doom scenario provides a divergence from the ordinary, just like entertaining thoughts of winning tens of millions in the lottery. Some (hopefully most on here) have "prepped" over the years and are probably anxious to put it to use. Don't worry, one of these days it's gonna happen when we least expect it, like 9-11, but much worse on a global scale.

Well for me I always imagine it landing in DC while they are in session. That is one way to turn a frown upside down.

It may not collide with earth but it can still do some good damage as with the Chelyabinsk meteorite in Russia.

2007 EJ is the biggest threat at nearly 70 LD away!? I think they read it in AU and thought it was LD.

Great doom porn. We need more predictions that never happen. I don't like bad predictions that come true myself.

Maybe there will be a small meteor that hits an anthill in South America. I am sure the ants will think it is doomsday.
