Have you guys seen those? I think they're ridiculous! But really they're just a reflection of how people are more and more self-absorbed and alone. I went to downtown Montreal and in the old port and over the course of 4-5 hours I saw 8 of them. Mostly asians... The name alone makes me cringe.

Even celebrities use them, here's P. Diddy

Are they carrying them everywhere?

Also found this interesting article on RT, $27k fine or 3 years behind bars for 'selfie-stick'? so apparently it is illegal to use a Selfie Stick in South Korea. Why? They need to be properly tested to make sure they don't interfere with other devices, of course.

Did you get one for Christmas?

Makes phone much easier to steal.
If you see someone using it run past grab it and then give it back and explain why they shouldn't use them.
Or just beat them around the head with it.

Oh for Gods sake!

There are few things that the world needed LESS than a newer, better way to be a self obsessed moron while on holiday.

The latter would be my preferred option.

The heading in the last picture says it all. If you're taking so many pictures of yourself that you use special equipment, you need help. ......................................
Just took a minute to think....I don't have any selfies. I'd rather they be of where I am. I see myself in the mirror every day, I don't need pictures.

Ah, cyanide and happiness, you always know just what to say to put a smile on my face. Selfie stick? Never had it, Haha, never will. Whover thought of that should be put in a forced labor camp for deliberately debilitating the progression of society.

I really don't get selfies... when did it become so socially acceptable.

Imagine its 1992 and you are hanging out with your friend. She wants to show you some pictures she took so she gets out a 3 ring photo album. As you flip through the pages you discover that all the pictures are of her and she took them herself...
Wouldn't you think something was wrong with that person?

I catch idiots at stoplights all the time taking duckface selfies and not paying attention to anything else. Its disturbing.
In fact I think its right up there with referring to yourself in the 3rd person on the narcissism scale.

OMG unbelievable! I actually had to stop following a niece on my husbands side because she was constantly posting pics of herself and saying she was a beautiful cool Mom and stuff. Get over yourself! I bet she rushes out to get one.

too many people seem to be displacing thier rage / contempt for peoples behaviour onto an inaminate object

its not the sticks fault that 10 million wankers use one to take a billiion indistingishable studies in narciscism

the concept of the selfie stick is a very good one - and can , if used creativly allow some novel camera angles and perspective

i have one - mine is used for :

climbing - 90 % pics of belay stations and rigging - for info and education puroses - plus documenting moves / bad rock , cruxes etc etc that cannot be incorporated into one frame when you are 200mm from the rock

kyaking - i have a selfie stick holder mounted front and back of all my hulls the 1.5m higher position makes for a different prespective of action shot - that previously was only possible with a mate on a bridge

apart from the examples above - i use mine more for wildlife photography and arctitecture than pics of me - i am not very photogenic - so i dont do selfies

several freinds use them for engineering // building inspection and such

so why not attack the behaviour - not an innocent stick ?

The irony is that I could genuinely use one of these. That's because most people are so self centric and into isolated socialising now that I much prefer to do everything on my own.

Yes I'm being facetious.

ignorant_ape,

You would be perfectly correct in your assessment, if the damned things were not CALLED selfie sticks. If their proper name, underwhich they are sold, was "Photographic Angular and Altitudinal Assistive Device" or something of that nature, then I could understand it. But it is a selfie stick. People always say "What's in a name though eh?" but the fact is, that sometimes there is an awful lot in a name, and this is a case in point!

Way to use a tool to the maximum of its potential though! The thing is, I can see a use for these, for photographing festival sets at rock festivals, for keeping an eye on things at protests and rallies, and as navigational aids, getting a bit of a better view of the terrain ahead or over a rise and so on. But you would not catch me carrying one unless they re-named the product and stopped selling them to the sort of people who would use them purely to inflate their already dangerously over pumped egos!

Meh. Not really that big of a deal.

I happened to be in Rockefeller Center for work just before the holiday and saw numerous people using these to take pictures of themselves and family members with the tree in the background.

I actually thought it was more considerate then having people walk around your shot while a stranger snapped a few pics for you.

Well, it was definitely a hit when I bought it for my family's White Elephant gift exchange this year. Much like the Shakeweight was a few years ago.

I find the whole utube, FB phenomenon of selfies, pictures of your food and drinking, and other inane photo narcissism a very curious cultural turn of events.

Are people so desperate to connect, do they feel so alone, has human inter action been replaced by media and the www?

And why am I here posting on ATS rather than outside enjoying the fresh air and interacting with people? Is my ego so fragile that I need to get affirmation of my thoughts and feelings on the internet?

We are entering a brave new world....
