NEW YORK — NASA needs your help to name a new space robot, and you could win some cash doing it.

NASA officials are asking space fans around the world to help name, and design a mission patch for, a new free-flying robot expected to launch to the International Space Station in 2017. The first-place winner of the challenge will receive $1,000. Officials with the space agency put out the call to any interested space fans during a packed session here at New York Comic Con on Saturday (Oct. 11).

For all the space lovers out there, here's your chance to not only name a droid but you'll also get to design the mission patch and NASA will give you a thousand bucks on top of it!

I think it's hilarious this was announced at Comic Con!

Get on it people.

A thousand dollars?

NASA please, this isn't 1970 anymore. Real money is real impetus to contribute. S + F, I love the concept but they have to entice the players a little more.

Comic Con is the perfect place to release this information, it's filled with geeks and nerds who eat this stuff up!

I actually have a couple of ideas for names that I've used in some of sci-fi my stories! Super exciting!!

My first thought is Vincent (Vital Information Necessary CENTralized), as in the floating robot from the late 70's sci fi movie Black Hole (en.wikipedia.org... ) ...then I thought about it more, and I think Bob (BiO-sanitation Battalion) may be more like it.

Pics if you don't remember these guys....
