After having his alcoholic, but trustworthy co-pilot shangheid by slavers, the hero is told that he must allow the female night-club singer (actually a highly trained spy) on his plane, because the aviation laws stipulate that he must have a co-pilot.
Being unaccustomed and suspicious of women (who also find him troublesomely irresistible), the pilot quickly thinks of an alternative.

He suggests that his eye-patched dog would make a fit co-pilot instead.

This is refused, not because he's a dog, but because he's only got one eye.
