According to a tweet from @NYCityAlerts, a massive sinkhole has just opened up in lower Manhattan. The collapse was preceded by a water main break around 11am, flooding several restaurants including the famed Katz's Deli (don't worry, the pastrami is safe).

The biggest pot hole ever just showed up in NYC. A 55 year old water line ruptured flooding parts of the lower east side in manhattan. The ruptured line created a 20ft x 20ft hole in the middle of the street. I'm sure there are a lot of confused and upset construction workers out there today.

Hopefully the sinkhole doesn't take Katz's down with it because I've been meaning to go there and try their famous pastrami on rye for the longest. Oy vey...

Has anyone else been curious to why there's been so many sinkholes lately or am I the only one?

Yikes, I live about an hour north of Manhattan, not too close, still these sinkholes scare the crap out of me.

Is a collapse caused by a water main break really a sinkhole?

Doesn't seem so....

We could make use of all these sink holes, instead of dumping our rubbish in a landfill we could dump it into a sink hole

All those underground cities being built for the elite are eroding our foundation!

Ah, who cares? We are just peons!

You play god and nature will get you back. Karma. Fracking and underground bunkers to hide your sorry rich useless asse$ does not help either.

Right!

Wasn't Springer just talking about this on Americas Book of Secrets the other night!

That's not really a natural sinkhole.

Huge water main burst under massive pressure underground liquifies and washes away sub terrainan support.

Road above ground collapses leaving hole.

We need a war against sinkholes, fast.

It does seems they often come in the news the last 5 years or so everywhere.

Btw we now probaly have a good anwer for the suddenly collapse of building 7 during 9-11.

Hey...

Katz's made ATS.

As others have said, it was a ruptured water line not like the massive ones in other countries reported over the years in other threads.

How is a burst water pipe a few feet below the road related to underground cities?

Well sinkholes are natural, but this sink hole was "man-made". Sinkhole or not, same basic physics. Water washed away the soil below, ground collapsed in.

I want me some 'strami!
