The Opera browser doesn't work well with embedded fonts. Try using chrome or firefox.

What do you mean the smileys were created? If the smileys are a font on your system, you may need to remove them to resolve the conflict.

Click on Tools > Advanced > Plugins

Try disabling plugins.

Really? I have never had this problem with Opera. I just switched to it about 3 weeks ago, I had to as I was fed up with all the ads coming from google chrome or fire fox.

It is likely a plugin or extension as proposed by lucid lunacy.

I think you should try and replicate it in another browser. Try Firefox. Might be useful to know if the issue is browser-specific

Opera> Preferences > Advanced > Fonts

Is there some 'smiley' font listed or is there an ability to restore defaults?

Paste this in the URL:

opera:config

Then try Websites > Display > Customize Fonts

Those all look like standard fonts?

*My Opera is on a Mac. Not sure if we have same layout
