yeah, i would have to agree..it is only a matter of time before this epidemic drastically spreads infiltrating into the states. if it hit toronto, then the chances for it to cross U.S. borders is highly possible.

Beijing starting to run out of drugs and other medical supplies for SARS patients. Villagers burn down proposed SARS quarantine facility.

Things are starting to come apart over there... wonder how long we have?

SARS patients relapsing or being reinfected.

This IS proof of SARS mutation, because once your body fights off an infection you have antibodies to prevent reinfection. If you are being reinfected, SARS is mutating in such a way as to not be recognized by the antibodies....

This is NOT good....

Matt Stone and Trey Parker are on the right path. They see the times ahead. They look into the past and see the future. For the future repeats it's self.

This SARS outbreak is cause for concern, and cause for speculation. We need to start asking questions and stop looking on. We observe too much. One day it will sneak up on us.

Who here doesn't believe that the Asian people are being oppressed by America????

Those who don't, think again. The Asian people have suffered under the Imperialists and the Underworld agents. Many men of many organizations have many causes. Some of those men are governmental, some in the intelligence field, others in the military, and even tycoons and conglomerates. If one were to look into the origins of the OSS or the former CIA, one would find out that it was an intelligence agency set up by Daniel Paysuer, or the Crown Prince Louis of France.

Yeah France.

So wake up America!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that the great Iraqi Foreign Information Minister said it best when he says:

"They don't even have control of themselves."

Think about it.

Do we control this country??? Do our actions abroad represent the mindset of the American people???

I should hope not. That would mean that we lost a lot of Americans. For no American would justify the genocide of millions for another's saftey or freedom. Yet we did, and we do. South Park made that very clear last night. They also made it clear that our time has come. Does anyone else see what I mean??????

Two new SARS cases emerge
May 01, 2003

TORONTO (CP)

There were stark reminders today that Torontos battle with SARS is not over, with the revelation that there may be two new cases among hospital workers.

That news followed closely on the heels of the announcement late yesterday that two more men had died of SARS.

Onea 39-year-old with no underlying medical problemswas the youngest person to die in the citys seven-week long outbreak.

Those deaths brought the death toll here to 23.

Vaccine could take years to develop
By Richard Spencer and Roger Highfield, Science Editor
(Filed: 30/04/2003)

Vaccines or drugs to fight Sars could take years to reach patients, while there are concerns that the virus responsible for the disease could evolve to become more deadly, scientists said yesterday.

Because of the long lead time involved in bringing a new treatment from the lab to the surgery, Sars drugs could take years to emerge, according to Dr Anne Bridgen, of the University of Ulster.

The disease agent, a coronavirus, is one of those responsible for the common cold and is also common in animals, she said. "There is as yet no drug treatment that can either prevent or cure a coronavirus infection."

Leo Poon, associate professor of the University of Hong Kong school of medicine, said the virus was based on a RNA genetic sequence which was prone to mutate. This raises the possibility of it reappearing after a "lie low" period in a more virulent form.

While the teams studying the virus are agreed that the future course of the disease cannot be predicted with any certainty, many are describing the coming months as a "window of opportunity" to eradicate it before it becomes endemic.

Reported new cases in Guangdong, the southern Chinese province where the disease is believed to have originated five months ago are starting to fall, the World Health Organisation said yesterday.

Sars factfile

The death rate from Sars is five to six per cent compared with 30 per cent for smallpox

Most deaths are in older people and in those with other diseases.

Latest WHO figures are 4,288 cases and 251 deaths

Cases rose by 343 over the last two days

Classic symptoms for Sars are a rapid rise in temperature, a dry cough and shortness of breath

The incubation period is about 10 days

Doctors say Sars is infectious only when symptoms have occurred

People are advised against travelling to China, Toronto and Hong Kong

I agree, wonderful ploy by more money hungary mongers. I guess they got to me too though, I bought the new "Zulu Figmento" active life purifiers. Comes with a built in indeffinate energy source that powers the lasers which in turn scrub the particles passing through the mask.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome is a completely new infectious disease spread by human contact, and kills about four percent of the victims. The epidemic originated in Guangdong Province, South China. The Chinese authority has admitted mishandling the crisis and to have been slow to inform its citizens.

A palpable sense of panic has gripped the health authorities around the world.

Yet vaccines are very complicated, even for simple pathogens. There is no treatment yet for HIV, despite an enormous effort. What stops HIV? Prevention & Containment, not vaccines. Condoms cost nothing, antiviral drugs cost a lot.

And even if vaccines could be made, the virus is rapidly mutating...

To close our eyes to the threat or to argue that it is not a threat is irrational.

SARS will soon be, all over the world.

Very very bad news.... do you notice that the daily death rate from SARS is only getting bigger every day??

TORONTO, May 2 (UPI) -- The number of SARS cases continued to rise Friday, reaching more than 6,000, as a Hong Kong researcher reported that the virus linked to the disease appears to be changing rapidly.

The global total of probable and confirmed cases of the pneumonia-like disease reached 6,054, according to the World Health Organization, up 207 since Thursday. The global outbreak has now claimed 417 lives, up 26 from a day earlier.

Meanwhile, researchers at the Chinese University of Hong Kong say they have evidence that the so-called "coronavirus" associated with severe atypical respiratory syndrome, or SARS, is mutating rapidly.

China was counting on a series of major sporting events to prove to the world it's ready to stage the 2008 Summer Olympics.

The SARS outbreak changed those plans.

The mysterious virus has killed nearly 200 people in China and infected thousands of others. And one by one, it has taken a toll on the long list of tournaments China was hoping to use as practice runs for the Olympics.

Aussie teens in SARS isolation
Monday 5 May 2003, 6:05 AM

Two Australian teenagers suspected of suffering from the deadly SARS virus remain in isolation in an Indian hospital while members of their group are quarantined in a youth hostel.

A group of 89 Australian missionaries spent much of the weekend under police guard in their accommodation in central India after 19-year-old Luke Charles Wilcox, of Adelaide, and Robert Jason Gudall, 18, showed symptoms of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.

VERY SCARY...

Scientists estimate SARS death rate in Hong Kong nearly 20 percent
Email to a Friend
Printer Friendly Version

London-AP -- The first major study of SARS trends estimates that about 20 percent of people hospitalized with the disease in Hong Kong die of it.

But some experts believe the number may look high because of the patients' ages. The average age of the Hong Kong patients is 50, and disease experts generally agree that the virus is much more deadly in people over 60. In fact, the new study puts the death rate for those over 60 at 55 percent.

The British study is on the Web site of a British journal, The Lancet.

Experts say the figures do not reflect the chance of the average person anywhere dying from SARS if he or she contracts it. There is debate about what the death rate is. But health agencies estimate it between about six percent and ten percent.
